Slow Change

Yesterday I did something wild and crazy, something raw and daring and in-your-face cutting edge.
For the first time in seven years, I tried a new chocolate chip cookie recipe.
Oh the pride I took yesterday morning as I opened a cookbook and looked up cookies and then turned to that page and decided that yes, today would be the day I would try this new recipe. Today is the day for personal evolution, I declared, for branching out and moving on. Adventure, here I come!
I realized a bit later of course, how utterly lame this all was—priding myself on trying a new cookie recipe? Seriously?
But, yes—seriously. Because my chocolate chip cookie recipe is one of those things, a little something in my list of Rachel’s Things that hold tight and firm, things I almost never change because they work well and get the job done and why would I upset the apple cart?
After realizing what a big deal it was for me to try this new recipe, I started to take note of all the other items on my List, things I rarely if ever change, things from which I am loathe to drift away.
They include:
chocolate chip cookie recipe
my deodorant (brand and scent)
certain hygiene products
peanut butter
laundry detergent
brand of tennis shoe
lipstick (this one I’m actually getting better about)
I think I remember reading about this back when I was a journalism grad student, something about certain items being harder for advertisers to sell, things that the consumer is not easily willing to switch.
What about you? Do you have certain products that you stick to no matter what?
