Recipes for Fall Feasts

In my recent post about our upcoming Oktoberfest, Tiffany asks:
“Would you be willing to share what is on your menu for your Oktoberfest? It sounds like it would be a fun way to celebrate fall!”
It sure is and I sure will. Our Oktoberfest is a traditional gathering of friends and family. We carve pumpkins, play horseshoes, drink beer, and give the kids lots of cotton candy and other treats.
Dan’s poem (he traditionally writes an Oktoberfest rhyme for each year’s invitation) for this year is:
Mums are red
Cotton candy is blue
If you’re looking for fun,
The ‘fest is for you.
Cute, right?
But Tiffany asked for recipes, so here we go. The following have been carefully selected, taste-tested, and approved by my family over the past 14 years (Have we really been doing this that long??).
Pumpkin Bread
This is my favorite pumpkin bread—no nuts, no chocolate chips. Just pumpkin and spices—the way it’s supposed to be.
Savory Beef Stew
This stew has a secret ingredient—cranberry juice!—it smells delicious when it’s cooking and has an unmistakable New England “fall” flavor.
Beer Rolls
I serve these ale rolls with the stew. The flavor is not too strong—The baking removes the alcohol, so even my kids enjoy them!
Cheddar Cheeseball
This is a popular, easy appetizer that you can make ahead and freeze (for weeks) or refrigerate (for days).
Brown Sugar Cut-Outs
A tiny bit of coffee and a bit of cinnamon make these cut out sugar cookies deliciously different. I cut them out in leaf shapes and frostthem with Royal Icing which dries hard. (See how last year’s came out here.)
And finally ...
Pumpkin Pie made with this pie crust.
This recipe is from my mom and it makes a large sized pie that serves a crowd. I also make apple pie (but you probably have your own favorite recipe for that already) and pecan pie (My secret recipe is the one on the back of the bottle of Karo syrup).
Let me know if you try out any of these recipes for your entertaining needs this year—I love hearing about how other families enjoy and celebrate this beautiful season.
Happy feasting!
