Remembering our Vets

A prayer on Veteran's Day

Today, we recall the tremendous service and sacrifice of so many men and women who have courageously and valiantly served in the United States military.

More than just a day off of school or work, today should be a day of prayer, commemoration and thankfulness.  As families, this is the perfect day to commemorate our vets in a special way.  A few ideas for you and your family might include:

*  Attend Mass together and pray for all veterans, those who have died as well as those who are currently serving our country
*  Visit a local Veteran’s cemetery to pray for the repose of the souls of all veterans
*  Make cards of thanksgiving and deliver them to your local VA hospital or inquire about volunteer opportunities at the hospital
*  Donate canned or non-perishable food to your local community food bank or homeless shelter in honor of veterans
*  If you know a family who has a family member serving abroad, bake something special to deliver to them, along with a homemade card of thanks for their sacrifice and service

Prayer on Veterans Day

Dear Lord Jesus Christ,
those whom we honor today
are examples of your words:
“Greater love than this no one has:
that he lay down his life for his friends.”
They gave up their lives in defense of freedom
for their loved ones and their country.

Teach me to appreciate the virtue of patriotism -
a true and Christian love of country.
Let me love my country not to follow it blindly
but to make it the land of goodness
that it should be.
Let my patriotism be such
that it will not exclude the other nations of the world
but include them in a powerful love of country
that has room for all others too.
