Romance Abounds

Over the past week, a nasty virus made its way through our family. The worst of its symptoms was a high fever accompanied by body aches and sometimes vomiting.
Last night, I saw the hours of 2 am, 3 am, 4 am, and 5 am as I rocked a feverish Daniel, wearing only a onesie, with a cool washcloth on his forehead. His fever would spike and cause him to throw up. He would cry and shake as I cradled him, praying the Tylenol would stay down and hoping to give him a bit of rest.
Then early this morning, Dan was up before the sun—readying to bring the big boys to a basketball tournament. I was too tired to bake, but the kids have had their fill of Valentine candy and other treats. They have been playing computer games and sometimes napping as most of them are still too wiped out from sickness to do much else.
Meanwhile, I have been catching up the laundry and wondering about the possibility of a “romantic” in-house dinner for Dan and me tonight. I can’t imagine cooking anything nice, so if we don’t postpone our plans, we’ll have to change them, in favor of takeout.
It was in the midst of this kind of day that I opened a Valentine greeting my mother had emailed to all of my siblings and me.
“This morning at Mass I prayed that you may all grow in love of God and of those around you,” she wrote.
As conventionally un-romantic as our Valentine’s Day has been thus far, I think we have spent today doing exactly that.
