Sandra Bullock Offers Wise Words at the Oscars

So I watched the Oscars.
I wasn’t planning to, but then there they were. And there I was. And I watched.
I like pretty dresses and flashy jewelry and seeing movie stars playing themselves in real life. I take comfort in knowing I’m not the only Catholic woman who pays attention to such frivolous stuff.
By the time it was nearly midnight, though, I was beginning to question my decision to commit to this year’s Academy Awards. Was there going to be an award for “Best Mother of Eight Who Stayed Up Past Her Bedtime To Find Out What a Simple Google Search Would Reveal the Next Morning”? It wasn’t likely.
But I think Sandra Bullock, winner of the Oscar for Best Actress, made it worth my while. First of all, I thought her dress was very pretty—feminine and elegant without revealing lots of skin. And secondly, I really liked her acceptance speech. She was a little bit funny and a little bit emotional. She made the obligatory remark about “sexual orientation” but I can overlook that because she also remembered to thank her mom.
She thanked her mother Helga Bullock for encouraging her to be creative and forcing her to work hard. And (this was my favorite part) she thanked her mom for not letting her ride in cars with boys until she was 18. Because, she said, she would have done all the things her mother told her she would have done and jeopardized her future.
I thought that was a memorable Oscar moment, and I hope lots of young women listened carefully to those words.
If you watched any of the awards, what were some of your observations?
