Bishop Boland Confirmed me in 1999, completing my initiation into the Catholic Church. I’ll never forget that day as long as I live. He called me out out of all of the adults that night and asked me why I wanted to be a Catholic. I remember saying “Why have a piece of the pie when you can have the whole thing.” I think he liked that.
Savannah's New Bishop
Posted by Rachel Balducci in Family on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 4:18 PM
Like Philly, the Diocese of Savannah heard about our new bishop today—Franciscan Father Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM, 59, of the Archdiocese of Atlanta.
I loved his honesty about his reaction to the news:
Hartmayer said he received a phone call on July 5 from an official at The Vatican with a heavy Italian accent.
“I understood some words I recognized like ‘Pope Benedict XVI’ and ‘Diocese of Savannah,’ and my heart just started pounding.”
Can you imagine getting a call from the Vatican about becoming Bishop?
We joyfully look forward to this new season in our diocese, and pray many blessings upon Bishop Boland in his retirement. He has done a wonderful job (and he’s been a great boss!).

We’ve been waiting for this announcement. I’m ready to get to know our new bishop. God bless you, Bishop Boland!
