Scheduling Summer

What's on your "to do" list for this summer?

Yesterday, here in San Francisco, I had the amazing opportunity to spend a few hours with fellow Catholic Mom authors Ginny Moyer, Christine Watkins and Julie Paavola.  We spent about three hours meeting, laughing, planning and praying together at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in the heart of the city.  Our time together was fruitful, both because of what we learned from each other and the bonds of fellowship we were able to solidify with one another.

One of our fold, Ginny, teaches English in high school.  As she luxuriated in her second full day of “no school”, she shared that she was looking forward to summer break to spend more time with her children and her writing.  Her comments made me realize that I’m already about three weeks into my boys’ summer break and I have yet to set my “summer goals”.

Typically at the start of each summer, I sit down and write a list of things I hope to accomplish during the break from our hectic school schedule.  My goals always involve activities for the boys as well as a few house related projects that don’t quite get done during the rush of classes and activities mid-year.  It’s nice to be able to reflect back at the end of the summer and see what’s been crossed off, but I’ll admit that sometimes summer “to do” tasks ultimately get added to the “back to school” list I formulate in late August.

This year, my to do list is heavy with items related to getting my son Eric off to college in the Fall, with teaching Adam to drive, and with getting some of my writing and speaking related responsibilities taken care of.  By the end of the day today, I hope to have the list finalized with some time goals set for myself.  But at the top of the list this year is the reminder to myself to emphasize my spiritual life and my time with my men above anything else I may feel called to take on.

How about you?  Do you have a summer “to do” list for yourself and your children?  Are there any special goals or projects you plan to accomplish this summer?  Or is summer the time to throw away lists and simply enjoy doing nothing?
