Secretariat: Winner of a Family Movie

Last Friday night, Dan and I took all the kids to see Secretariat. (We checked it out at Kids in Mind first and you should too, to be sure it’s a good fit for you and your kids).
It ... was ... an awesome family movie.
I cried, but of course that doesn’t tell you anything. I always cry. But I think a few male members of the family might have had some moist eyes as well.
It was just such a touching story and it was very well done, with great acting, photography, and music.
I don’t suppose I can give you any spoilerers, since we all know how the story ends, but I can tell you that there was a lot more to this real-life story of a champion than I previously knew. Oh, and John Malkovich played an amazing Lucien Laurin (Secretariat’s trainer).
I think Secretariat is a rare gem of a family movie—one worth paying for in the theater. I winced just a bit at the price tag to get the 10 of us through the door on Friday night, but you know what? I left there glad that we had supported such a high-quality, well-done, family-friendly film in the theater. We vote for movies with our wallets, after all.
I recently read a review that I think deals well with some of the deeper themes in the movie. I agree with the reviewer that the movie gave an honest portrayal of some of the sacrifices Penny Tweedy made in being away from her family in order to make Secretariat the success he turned out to be. There’s lots of fodder for great family discussions there.
How about you? Will you and your family be watching Secretariat? Or have you seen any other family-friendly films lately?
