Seeking a Miracle

Three weeks ago we took our daughter to the emergency room in the wee hours of the morning because she had developed croup and was having trouble breathing. I was 37 weeks pregnant at the time, and as we drove through the cold and dark, I said to my husband, “I really think we should definitely go with the name Blaise for this baby. Our family could use St. Blaise’s patronage.”
I didn’t know just how right I would be about that.
We’ve now spent four nights in the hospital with our little Blaise, who is two weeks old today. He is recovering well on his own, but he has RSV and right now his lungs still need a little extra oxygen so that he can manage to get enough. We will be here until he can breathe satisfactorily without it.
The various doctors and nurses have different opinions about how long this will take, and I was feeling discouraged after talking with a particularly pessimistic one this morning. We could conceivably be here for quite a while yet.
But then it occurred to me: tomorrow is the feast of St. Blaise! He is known for being a powerful intercessor against ailments of the throat. Our son is named for him. Why should we not be hopeful and pray for a miracle?
Being part of the Faith & Family Live community has been a huge blessing to me, and now I would like to ask for even more blessing from all of you. Will everyone who reads this send up a prayer to St. Blaise that our tiny son will improve miraculously quickly?
By the power of God, through the intercession of the saints, nothing is impossible. And it would be such a lovely way to honor St. Blaise’s feast day!
