Simple Pleasures

What are yours?

I was on a women’s retreat this weekend and a short portion of the day focused on some of the women sharing their favorite “simple pleasures”—little things they do that they love and take delight in.

I loved hearing what these women had to say. An older woman loves playing cards once a week with a group of friends. Another woman looks forward to her weekly trip to the gourmet grocers where she buys a very small portion of really good coffee and a smidge of candy—then she goes home to enjoy it. There was a woman who plays the flute, someone who has a rose garden, and the woman who takes her elderly mother, who lives with her, to see all the swollen creeks in the area after it rains. (Of course, I could really identify with the gal who said when her boys were very young, her favorite moment was using the restroom without interruption!)

The retreat was wonderful, but that short bit in particular gave me so much to ponder. What are my simple pleasures? What are the little moments in my day or week that I really look forward to? We really can find as many (or as few) as we allow ourselves.

For me, I look forward to those few minutes each afternoon when the light across my living room floor is just so. If Henry is napping, I sit quietly and read or think or spend a moment in prayer. Other simple pleasures include our daily walk, warm clothes out of the dryer, and those afternoons when the boys are outside playing and I meet up with my mom or dad at the back fence and we chat, even for a minute.

What about you? What are your simple pleasures?

I read for pleasure everyday—usually fiction, but not always.  I read anywhere and everywhere I can.  I get really unhappy if life interferes and I miss a few days!

My parents live on an island in Lake Erie. Around 6:30 every morning my Dad takes what we have dubbed “The Tour.” He pours a bunch of cups of coffee, makes a bunch of toast, and then heads down the beach to my sisters’ homes to collect anyone who wants to come along. We drive through soybean and wheat fields looking for pheasants, rabbits, and wild turkeys all while solving the problems of the world. I love coffee, I love Pelee Island, and I love my Dad. A simple but priceless pleasure.

sounds heavenly…

Clean sheets on the bed
Great smelling soap from Bath & Body Works
Packages or letters in the mailbox
Good books
Naps

To name a few!  I love remembering simple pleasures!

I used to look forward to letters in the mail box… now it’s the emails I get every day (well, I still get letters in the mail box from my mother - no computer for her!).

An evening walk with my husband & children—especially during this beautiful autumn season.  Sharing a cup of coffee & some quiet time (maybe even catching the sunrise) on the front porch with my husband, early in the morning on the weekend, before the children are up (& they are early risers, too!).

Hot chocolate on a snowy afternoon
The aroma of a crock pot when you come home from work
NAPS!
Walking/exploring in the timber behind my apartment
Hot baths
Back massages from the hubby!

Oh I could go on and on!

Fresh-baked cookies and breads and the smell they give your home
Flossing - yes, strange but true!  I love clean teeth:)
Walking in ocean waves
Hearing babies ‘belly laugh’
Finding unexpected money in a pocket or purse
Laying in the morning darkness, under warm blankets, with DH before everyone awakes
Cheesecake
Phone calls from old friends
Freshly clipped fingernails
Getting a really good deal on something essential when money is tight
A glass of cold water and a delightful breeze on a warm summer day
When all the kids sleep through the night, even if it’s one night only!
Like Maggie, I could go on as well!

a glass of wine after the little ones are in bed
reading in bed
a hot shower
knitting! with a glass of wine! in bed! after a hot shower! and perhaps with some chocolate to nibble on and enjoy!

I really love hanging a set of fresh fluffy smelly towels in my bathroom.  One for the hands, two big ones on the bar, a bath mat on the ledge of the tub—MMMM!

Reading the comics page every night before bed and doing the word unscramble - by that time my mind can’t grasp anything much deeper, and I’ve always loved the comics.

A cup of strong, hot, sweet (decaf-nursing) coffee with a biscotti, listening to beautiful music and chatting with DH as we begin a busy day
Going to Mass by. my. self.

Listening to children laugh uproariously at a movie scene

I love this, Rachel! It could be a series, a reminder each week…

For me, it’s standing at the kitchen sink, looking out over the back pasture at the magnificent fall sunsets or, when I’m doing dishes after the sun sets, pondering the day as I have a few moments to just soak in the suds (I am the dishwasher).
