Small Successes

a new weekly event

I got such a positive response to my original Small Successes post that I thought we should make it a weekly event and invite other bloggers to participate as well.

It’s important for moms to recognize that all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. So let’s do that.

On Thursday of each week, I’ll get us started with a list of my own small successes. To participate, just write up a list of 3 of your recent Small Successes and post it on your blog along with the Small Successes button (go here to get the code). You are not required to use the button, but please do link back to the main post here. Then you can add your blog here using the Mr. Linky form.

If you don’t have a blog, you can share your Small Successes in the comments.

To get us started, here are my Small Successes for this week:

1. I scrubbed out the dog’s food dish. It really really really needed it. Trust me.

2. I spent 15 minutes going through the small kids’ toys and, one gigantic garbage bag later, I had consolidated 4 baskets of toys into 2.

3. I let the kids watch a movie and then, instead of rushing to use the free time to get work done, I let the housework wait. I got down on the floor with pillows and blankets and watched it with them.

I can’t wait to read yours!

1. Yesterday, when my OBGYN found out I was practicing NFP as a form of birth control at my anual exam and asked, deparagingly,  how it was working for me, I squelched the outrage, gave him the benefit of the doubt and replied I’ve been married for 5 years and have 1 child.  He stood there slack jawed for a moment, and said I guess you know what you’re doing (I also squelched the reply - really?  and if the Lord had blessed me with 5 then I wouldn’t know what I was doing?) .  I’m hopeful that maybe next time he won’t have such a negative view of such a wonderful practice.  Here’s to praying for a pro-life OB-GYN in RI…
2. When my husband’s employment situation took a turn for the worse, instead of getting out my frustration on him by saying things that would hurt him and our marriage, I took a shower instead to calm down.
3.  I thought about going to the gym.  Really, I did.  Maybe next week I’ll actually get there.

1. Got to see an empty hamper for 1 full day.

2. Finally cleaned out all the garbage and kids toys that had piled up in our minivan.

3. Finally got to Weight Watchers and lost 3 lbs. this week.

They don’t seem like much, but they huge accomplishments.

1. I went to a nice lunch yesterday with an old friend, guilt-free.  Remembered that I am a separate person with ideas and a sense of humor!  Imagine that!
2. Made a chocolate cake for the family altho I was tired and didn’t feel like it.  And they all loved it and were very complimentary.  Definitely good for my ego.
3. Have decided to start a book club for me and some of my mom friends.  Okay, so I haven’t done it yet, but just deciding to do it is a victory, IMO.

I posted mine at my blog! Thanks, Danielle, I love this idea!

I won’t put this on my blog or daddy will worry:

1. I am making the kids wait for lunch till they are nicer to each other for 2 mins. They are all still alive.
2. Its a fun, hot lunch and was ready early since they are hungry early.
3. I took lots of yesterday off to hang out with a friend and did just that—- hang out and enjoy!

Great idea Danielle! Congrats on your successes ladies! Mine are posted on my blog. Nancy

1. I actually worked out 3 days this week. That is a huge accomplishment with my 9 month old.

2. I didn’t lose my temper with my mother even though she was being difficult.

3. I haven’t napped with the baby at all this week and have instead used that time wisely.

1. I changed the sheets on childrens bed this week.  The true accomplishment in this is that it was not because of a potty accident or vomiting.

2.I learned that there are a lot of women out there who have websites. I will save the accomplishment of learning about blogs and websites some other time.

3. I went to the health club—to get the paperwork to cancel my membership—to stressful tring to get there.

1. I Swiffered AND washed the hardwood floors in the living room and dining room on Monday. This was last done the day before the baby’s baptism…in September.
2. I researched, ordered and facilitated the delivery of our new washing machine this week rather than whining about it and making my husband do it.
3. I typed this entire comment with one hand because my 5-month-old is sleeping in the other—and I only had two typos!
-Tina

I don’t have a public blog. :D

1. Made pretty tasteful, (meaning none rejected by the kids!) on time, meals this week for dinner.

2.  Figured out how to bake something in my new-to-me oven.

3. Fed the baby before he was starving everyday this week.  He is just beginning to eat bigger meals - and to have it ready, even before our own meals has been a juggling act.

Wonderful idea.  I read you ALL the time via google reader.

Posted mine at my blog.  What a terrific way to celebrate everyday motherhood and small successes!

1.  Made it through yesterday with a sore throat, achy body and an energetic 1 year old, AND my husband’s 14 hour day… and I only almost lost it once!

2.  Succeeded in getting up at 6am for over a week now (excpet for my sick day yesterday).  I’m working on getting up before my daughter to have prayer time alone and with my husband.

3.  Introduced myself to a new young family with a baby my daughter’s age after Mass on Sunday… I think new friendships are in the works!

1.  After looking at the print-out of Danielle’s November post on how to make homemade bread I finally did it today - can’t wait to taste it.

2. I planned all of our meals for our three day ski trip this weekend and made a list so I remember all of the ingredients (last time I forgot salt!)

3.  Have stopped to make our United States of America puzzle with my three year old - 3 times smile

LOVE this idea!  Great reminder that it takes lots of little things to complete the big picture!

1.  Got birthday cards in the mail today that will actually arrive to the recipients BEFORE their respective birthdays.
2.  Had lunch with my 2 closest friends.
3.  Took my daughters to the park (it’s 70 degrees in Oklahoma today).  Okay, it was only for about 30 minutes because they really needed to get home for naps!

Great idea. It’s nice to give ourselves an occasional pat on the back since unlike in the working world, we don’t have quantitative measures (performance reviews, salaries, etc.) to keep us motivated. smile

God bless you all!

OK, 2 of these successes have to do with my work, but I think that still counts.
1.  I managed to leave my house before 7:10am for three straight days.
2.  I used the SmartBoard with my Kindergarten class twice this week so far.
3.  I have cooked dinner every night this week.

Love the idea, read the book and just love it…

1. didn’t have anything planned for dinner and still managed to make up something without ordering out..

2.  On week two of actually get the kids thier snack, teeth brushed, said our prayers and in bed all by 8pm.

3. Managed to get all the bathrooms cleaned in one day… Woo Hooo

1.  Watched the March for Life coverage on EWTN along with the WHOLE entire March for Life while my 5 yr old, 2 yr old, and 6 month old (just started army crawling) tooled around the house making messes.
2.  Folded a couple of loads of laundry while watching the March for Life but haven’t put them away yet.
3.  Even though the house is a disaster and the laundry I didn’t put away is now all over the house, was encouraged by things happening in the Pro-Life movement.  Did I mention nursed the baby off and on all day too and did get lunch and dinner made in there too although nothing really fancy or exciting.

Really, I do pay attention to my children most days.  It’s just that today was the March for Life!  Thank you Jesus for this day.  Help me to be more attentive tomorrow.

This comment is actually for Elizabeth, poster #1 above.  (I do have 3 small successes, but have learned that I need to keep them to myself or my pride takes over!)  smile

Have you done a search-by-state on One More Soul (http://www.omsoul.com)?  Several teachers (& two non-ob/gyn docs) came up for RI & I’m betting that you’d get a good pro-life referral just through contacting those people.  Good luck—from a former native RI’er!

Got up with husband and 3 older children at 4:30 am this morning and sent them off for the March for Life. Cleaned 2 of our main bathrooms from top to bottom, cleaned out 2 VERY nasty bunny cages, and made chocolate chip cookies and read stories with my 2 little ones.

Great idea, I posted mine, thanks for a wonderful medium smile

1. I made it to a 7:30 a.m. Mass this week that was offered as part of a Novena of Masses for the Unborn. (This includes, shower, make up, hair and even a dress!)

2. Managed to maintain a patriotic frame of mind even as Barack Hussein Obama was inaugurated. This is something I was unable to do during the Clinton years.

3. Remembered to take pix at my sons’ basketball games. Some of them came out really well!
I even got them downloaded into the computer already.

Wow, this is nice. I am pretty proud of myself! Thanks Danielle!

What a great idea Danielle!  It’s so true, our small successes are our big ones, they are what makes me feel great!  I’ve posted over on my blog:)

Thanks for this post!!!  I so enjoy reading about everyone’s small successes—most all have made me feel good about my own small accomlishments—that they really ARE accomplishments.  Many of hte posts mad em laugh out loud!  Wish we all lived in the same town wink.  Now, I must go and actually accomplish something today!  I’ll post later.

Fun idea!  Love that Mr. Linky!

Went to the gym while the girls were at dance class.
Surprised my husband on our Anniversary.
Had a very successful trip to NYC.

What a wonderful idea, Danielle! Thanks!

Just linked up.  I’ll update tomorrow!  GREAT idea!

1) I managed to stay on track with my children’s lessons dispite the baby being sick Tuesday and Wednesday.

2)kept my temper when my seven year old had a melt-down during her spelling quiz

3)I made it through last night when the baby’s sleep cycle remained messed up.

I’m so short of sleep that if I make through today without aquiring more bruises (I lack depth perception-when I’m tired I tend to misjudge and run into things) and manage dishes, supper and a load of laundry, I’m going to count it as a largish success.

Thankfully, my oldest is currently willing to help her sisters with a craft project and is normally a great help at supper and bedtime (Daddy works evenings).

1. I cleaned the living room bathroom while a 1 year old tried to throw things in the toilet.

2. I got done all the laundry.

3. I thoroughly cleaned the high chair and stored it until #3 is born and can use it.

1. I cleaned the shower….it was starting to grow all forms of life in there.

2. I bought my husband a book on “leadership”- a self-proclaimed non-reader….he has been readin abit every night and I sure it helps hm with his new role at work. I have been asking him to tell me abit about it when I have noticed he has had a read.

3. I had fun with my daughter all day….I made eating, sleeping, playing, washing…..all fun activites…and she enjoyed it her day with mum.

4. I cleaned mums kitchen after dinner at my parents house, whilst she was putting my nephew to bed….she looked tired and needed it!

Today we are finishing up our packing for a week long trip to Florida.  I usually become the wicked witch from the west when it comes to packing and getting things done before a trip.  Well, this time I have been trying to not worry about it and just enjoy a few minutes here and there.  We leave in two hours and we are just about done with packing and I am relaxed and not yelling at the kids.  I feel good.

Great idea…I have a tendency to look at what I didn’t get done rather than what I did…

This week I managed to keep calm after Brid cut her knees falling over ooouchh
Kept calm after seeing a huge lizard next to our back sliding door.
