So We Cut Off All His Hair

Remember this little mop top?
I think I almost can, but alas ... he is no more.
It happened so fast, I’m not sure what to make of it.
Last week, I was on the front deck cutting a big boy’s hair with the clippers (Because we’re classy like that—Haircuts! On the deck!) when I noticed Daniel noticing. He seemed more curious than terrified, so I took advantage.
“Danny,” I called to him when I was through, “Come on over here.”
He eyed me suspiciously.
“No, Mama,” he dared to say. “You gonna cut my hair.”
I neither confirmed nor denied.
Curiosity got the better of him, though, and he ventured closer.
“I just thought you might be ready for a Big Boy haircut,” I told him.
That did it. Within seconds, my Big Boy wannabe was in the chair, ready for the clippers.
I was hesitant at first. I put the clippers on their longest setting and touched them gently to his head. He giggled.
My husband happened to notice us at this point and had no tolerance for my hesitation. He took the clippers from me and started well, shearing my baby, just as he does to the big boys around here.
In the end, he sure looked different and I would be be a liar if I said my mother-heart wasn’t just a bit wounded at the sight of my freshly-sheared almost 3-year-old boy.
The aftermath:

No worries. I’ll be alright. Truly I will.
