Special Crispy Treats

I know they’re not everyone’s thing, but I love rice crispy treats. Yes, they’re basically just cereal-studded pieces of chewy sugar, but they are *delicious* cereal-studded balls of chewy sugar. Also, as long as you work fast and you’re not picky about letting them cool completely, you can be eating them less than fifteen minutes after you decide to make them.
And if there are children out there who don’t like crispy treats, I have yet to meet one of them. My own daughter certainly reacts enthusiastically when I mention the prospect of stirring up a batch.
There are plenty of ways to dress up rice crispy treats. Popular recipes add peanut butter or chocolate or both, and around holidays it’s not uncommon to see treats dyed Valentine pink or St. Patrick’s Day green. Fine methods all, but they require extra ingredients and - in my opinion - never beat the delicious simplicity of the original. Butter, marshmallows, and cereal: a beautiful combination.
However, I recently saw a recipe for “Salted Brown Butter Crispy Treats” that caught my attention. It has the same ingredients as the original; the recipe’s only additions are some salt and a little extra time to brown the butter. It seemed worth a try.
I finally got around to making them tonight. And oh, they are wonderful! My daughter, lover of the original crispy treats, seems to love these just as much. My husband and I are savoring the slightly more grown-up flavor of these, which are seriously enhanced by the browned butter and the hint of salt. I had to get out some heavy-duty foil and wrap them up to keep us from sailing through the pan over the course of the evening.
