Sucking it up

I'm having to be tough for a few days

I am in love with a vacuum cleaner.

Let me briefly explain my feelings towards my Miele—I adore this vacuum. I bought my vacuum (a model called the White Star) almost six years ago, and I use it at least once a day, if not more. This summer, a pregnant cyber-buddy of mine sent me an email with the subject line Miele. I thought she was announcing the birth of her new baby. Turns out, she had not yet had the baby and actually wanted information on buying a Miele vacuum for herself. But to name a child after this incredible creation did not seem too far-fetched.

Imagine my horror and despair, then, when late last week I went to turn on my vacuum and it did not make a sound. I tried several outlets to no avail, and finally decided I needed to call the vacuum repairman—something was terribly wrong. Miele sat broken over the weekend and I finally brought her to the shop yesterday.

In the days since Miele has been inoperable, my floors had gotten impressively filthy. And when the floors are dirty, it always makes cleaning anything else in the house kind of futile—no matter how hard I scrub, with the dirty floors it will all still seem dingy.

Today, I called the shop. It had been 24-hours with no word. They told me the grim news—they needed to order the parts and it would be at least a week until Miele was back to normal. I panicked for a moment—how could I go this many days with my floors covered in grime? I decided to borrow a vacuum from a friend, just to get the house in order.

I will admit that if you saw Miele, you would recognize we have a complicated relationship—while I do love her dearly, I also give her a good workout. She looks like she’s been rode hard and put up wet.

I think the repairman recognized that look. Today when I asked if they had a loaner Miele I could use until mine was ready, he put me on hold for a minute. “Ma’am,” he said getting back on the line, “we don’t have any available right now.”

The good news is that a few hours later, the shop called back to say Miele is ready for pick-up—they had the parts on hand after all, and I can go by in the morning to get her back.

What lesson is to be learned here I really don’t know, except I realize it’s totally lame to devote an entire post to a vacuum cleaner—and also only ten more hours until I can hold her in my arms again.
