Summer Living

I like to talk about summer schedules and having a plan, about how boys thrive on structure and how things go downhill fast when I lower my standards.
These things are all true and important, but there is also this other, equally important side of summer which I like to call “Chill Out, Girl.” As someone who enjoys having a plan and sticking to it, this can be a challenge. But I’m realizing that if you can’t just go with the flow during summer, when can you?
Tonight at around six, no one was hungry for dinner. My husband was at basketball practice for an upcoming charity game he will play in, and I was hemming and hawing about going to the pool. I couldn’t decide, so we sat around a bit longer. Finally, when I thought Paul would be done with practice, I decided to throw everyone in the car, drive the ten minutes to the pool and have him meet us there. No plan for dinner, the house a mess. It was 7:30 and we were headed out? Who does such a thing?
Off we went, to the pool, where we had a wonderful time until it closed. Then we came home and ate a hearty meal of macaroni-and-cheese, cooked by one of the boys (Paul and I had some leftovers) and then I sent the boys to bed at 10 p.m. Scandalous!
Or maybe just summer living.
We won’t do this every night. Tonight, I’m glad we did.
