We all know that fully half the fun of Super Bowl Sunday is the food. What’s cooking in your kitchen for Sunday’s big game?

One thing the NFL got right: having the Super Bowl before Lent starts (and for once, Valentine’s Day is before Lent this year too!). Yay!!
Super Bowl parties are a great way to build family traditions, a great-memory maker or the kids!! We are going to have pulled-pork sandwhiches, wings, veggies and dip, bacon-wrapped chestnuts & brownies in the shape of footballs. The diet will begin again on Monday!!
OK, Grinch here . . . is anyone bothered by this “high holy day” of America’s national religion? I am, and it is really not the kind of family tradition I care to encourage.
But, as I don’t live by myself, I’ll be cooking Super Bowl fare for my dh and boys: jalapeno poppers, veggie pizza, guacamole and chips, snack mix (popcorn, pretzels, peanuts) pistachios, buffalo wings, and brownies.
I understand what you are saying, if I did not have three men in my house I would not even have it on. Not a fan of the commercials for this game or any other, not exactly appropriate!!
I don’t know about that, Elisabeth. We really enjoy sports in our house—including the Super Bowl—and these kinds of celebrations and traditions are especially important to my husband and boys. The culture might pursue these things to the exclusion of God, but we don’t have to. We can enjoy them for what they are and in their proper place. I like being able to teach my children that being Catholic doesn’t mean having to shun all things in the popular culture. It just means enjoying them in their proper place, and with perspective.
Ok, here is a reason to watch the Superbowl this year!
What is the Most Talked About Ad of the 2010 Superbowl?I am sooo happy to say that the most talked about ad this year for Superbowl is a 30 second commercial about the sanctity of life with star Quarterback Tim Tebow and his mom. I have a link on my blog to watch a video from Stuart Shepard and Gard Schneeberger about the ad. People are already protesting, let’s show our support!! This story is truly inspiring, I can’t wait to see it!!
Some day I will figure out how to do the mr linky stuff…
I’m making a blue velvet cake (red velvet cake but with blue coloring instead of red…Go Colts!) , beer bread and a warm dip, mozzi sticks, fruit, cheese dip and chips. Super easy, and mostly junky, but I’m totally okay with that…Something mostly out of the ordinary for us. We’re also expecting a huge snow storm this weekend, so it will be a nice way to break up our weekend hibernation…cause I don’t think we are going to be getting out of here for a few days…if its as bad as they are predicting we’re going to be unable to get out until probably Monday…we’re going to need a fun distraction…what could be better than football, junk food and blue cake!
Jamie
I have been eying this recipe from The Pioneer Woman for a while, so I thought I would give it a try.
http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2009/11/mushrooms-stuffed-with-brie/
I, too, have cooked from Pioneer Woman! I tried the Chicken Spaghetti which was good and also the Texas sheet cake which was to-die-for. I just kept cutting little squares of of warm fudgy goodness until I had eaten a quarter of the pan. Don’t go anywhere near that recipe if you’re on a diet. I will try the mushroom recipe which sounds good.
The best layer dip on the planet. Men love this stuff (me too!):
SEVEN LAYER DIP
1. Spread 2 cans jalapeno bean dip in a 9x13 inch dish.
2. Spread guacamole over the bean dip.
3. Mix 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, and 1 envelope taco seasoning. Spread over the guacamole.
4. Chop 3 medium tomatoes, 1 bunch green onions (scallions), and 2 cans sliced ripe olives. Sprinkle on top of the other layers.
5. Top the whole thing with shredded cheddar cheese.
Serve with tortilla chips. Enjoy!
We’re stuffing potatoes, among other things. http://ebeth.typepad.com/reallearning/2010/02/super-stuffed-potatoes.html It’s snowing to beat the band now or I would be all over those mushrooms stuffed with brie. Alas, those aren’t the “staples” I stocked.
Oh, the stuffed potatoes and seven layer dip sound delicious. I am making mini egg rolls and DH is picking up a pork butt sold by my son’s Scout troop. The recipe for our mini egg rolls is on my blog, link below. I just made up the recipe, tweaked it a bunch over the years.
The recipe for mini egg rolls is here:

We turn off all the commercials—except maybe Tim Tebow’s this year! Usually my daughters and I go have “girl time” while the 4 guys do their “male bonding”. We’ll all be together this year, although I tell my husband that I just see colors moving across the screen like a baby does. He’ll have to watch 3 or 4 hours of craft/design shows to understand what I mean.
