Tea-riffic

Juliette turned nine yesterday.
It’s on special days like these that I revel in the blessing of my big girls. There is just something wonderful about sharing “girl-ness” with a growing-up one of your own.
I hadn’t even noticed the “girlie” theme of our celebration yesterday until about half way through Juliette’s opening of her presents.
To her one main gift (a watch), I added a bag filled with small surprises—lip gloss, nail polish, stationery, etc.
As she opened them, the boys looked on patiently. When she unwrapped a package of glittery hair clips, though, it was finally more than older brother Eamon could bear.
“Oookay,” he breathed as if the sheer girliness of what he was witnessing might just send him running from the room.
He survived. But then came the tea party.
We invited a few of Juliette’s friends over for afternoon tea with treats. When we were planning this gathering, Juliette was a bit concerned that her brothers might cause a ruckus during her party.
She need not have worried.
As I was preparing a dainty tray of finger sandwiches in anticipation of our guests’ arrival, Eamon came through the kitchen and raised an eyebrow.
“Have you had lunch?” I asked him.
He eyed the delicate sandwiches, glanced at the floral tea set arranged carefully on the table cloth covered dining room table, and smirked.
“Noooooo thank you,” he said and headed toward Sunday afternoon NFL in the living room.
We ladies sipped tea, chatted about babies, passed the cupcakes, and were left quite alone the entire afternoon.
