Ooh, excited to read this. I just opened it up from a friend who posted it on fb. Now I’m even more excited to read!
The Church Was Right on Birth Control

It’s been a good week to be a believing Catholic in the United States. Tumultuous, but good. It’s a cause of legitimate pride to see our Bishops taking a bold stand against the HHS contraception sterilization mandate. It’s been gratifying to see so many non-Catholics joining us in protest. Whatever they think of the Church’s teaching on contraception—and we can assume most of them disagree with it—they are standing with us in support of freedom of religion. I think this is partly because they see the writing on the wall: if the government can get away with forcing the Catholic church to do its bidding in the area of contraception, then our rulers may be emboldened to force abortion coverage on Protestant or Mormon organizations next. But I also think that our non-catholic allies are raising their voices on our behalf simply because they respect the Catholic Church and the tremendous amount of good it has done in this country through its many charitable institutions. Whether or not the HHS ruling has the potential to affect other religious groups, they are coming to our aid just for the sake of coming to our aid. Because we are all Americans. We stand together against tyranny, even if the tyrant is only picking on a particular group.
One more interesting thing is happening as a result of the HHS issue. People are wondering, and talking about: why exactly does the Catholic church still have this thing about birth control? It might be a window of opportunity for all of us to explain that teaching to others at a moment when they are exhibiting some almost friendly interest in that teaching.
This article at Business Insider is an amazing defense of the Church’s teaching After summarizing many societal declines that took place since the Pill because popular, the article continues:
“Is all this due to the Pill? Of course not. But the idea that widely-available contraception hasn’t led to dramatic societal change, or that this change has been exclusively to the good, is a much sillier notion than anything the Catholic Church teaches. So is the notion that it’s just OBVIOUSLY SILLY to get your moral cues from a venerable faith (as opposed to what? Britney Spears?).”

I think you can cut and paste the link for it to work
This is the link to the study the bishops mention- where increase access to contraception leads to MORE abortions! http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21134508
I am finally getting it myself, why the Church has been against birth control right from the get-go. Unfortunately the Business Insider link within this article seems to be broken. So I appreciate that you posted an extract from that article to give us some idea of what it is about.
Sorry that link malfunctioned. Here it is:

If this doesn’t work, just google Business Insider and “Church Was Right”. That should get you there.
I saw this article this morning and also posted it on my facebook. Praise God.
It did remind me of a quote that I heard and then committed to memory back in college…“The world will only truly be free when it is free of the disease of Christianity.”—Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood, birth control activist.
It’s good to know the roots/foundations of something before you start to participate in it. i am so glad that this is becoming a CHRISTIAN and Constitutional battle, instead of just a Catholic one.
I just wish the Catholic laity would stand up for their faith, or actually, believe their faith.
Agreed.
I also wish shepherds would lead as they are called to…even when certain topics are difficult to preach on because of widespread dissent among the faithful. There are SO many excellent resources out there to help Catholics better understand, evangelize & live the immense treasure that is their Catholic Faith. That being said, Faith is a gift, & one which we all must pray for an increase of.
many people—Christian and non-Christian—don’t believe that contraception is immoral, the Church’s teaching not withstanding. It’s not “an attack on religious freedom” to accomodate their beliefs by giving them an insurance option for birth control. It’s an act of toleration, even if one thinks contraception wrong. The Church teaches tolerance but this voice seems to be drowned out. Letting religious institutions restrict the insurance insurance plans offered is not going to teach anyone anything except how politicized (in a bad way) some religious groups have become.
your comment makes no sense. why in the world should someone have to do something that violates their religious beliefs? thats not toleration, thats tyranny.
the church is not fighting to outlaw contraception or to keep women from getting it. its fighting from having to pay it herself.
