The Waiting Game

Are you waiting for letters from colleges?

I just hung up the telephone with a girlfriend who was lamenting over an experiencing we are sharing together with our sons this year… the “waiting game”.  Both of our boys, who have known one another since Kindergarten, are waiting for college admissions decisions.  And so are their moms…

Max and Eric are both great students with wonderful prospects.  Both have applied to multiple colleges around the country.  We have been informed by most of the colleges and universities that we can expect admissions decisions in late March and early April.  Even though we have this information and know full well that no letters will be coming any time soon, my heart still skips a beat most days as I approach the mailbox.

Eric has had some uplifting news lately, learning that he is a National Merit Scholarship finalist and also a finalist for another wonderful scholarship opportunity.  He has been “pre-admitted” to one of our state universities, so we know that he has at least one great option.  And yet, we wait to hear from all of the the others schools on his list and ponder what his future will hold.  Honestly, today, I have no idea where one of the loves of my life will be living next Fall.

Waiting is good, right - don’t they say that “Patience is a virtue”?  While I try to model that virtue for my son, I must admit that—as my girlfriend said—the suspense is killing me.  We plan to travel to the East and visit several colleges over Spring break.  Perhaps that will help ease my sense of impatience a bit.

Somehow, it feels fitting that the height of the “waiting game” is being played out during the season of Lent.  Every time I begin to feel my mind fret over the great unknown that lies ahead of us, I try to turn to prayer—both for Eric and for all those across the country who check their mailboxes (and email inboxes) with baited breath each day.

Maybe I am unknowingly praying for your son or daughter.  Are you playing the “waiting game” or have you already received your good news?  Chime in with your college update and any advice that might make these long walks to the mailbox a bit more peaceful.
