Too Soon for Tiger?

Tomorrow at 1:42 pm, Tiger Woods will tee off at the Masters Tournament in August, Georgia following a four month hiatus brought on by a disastrous personal life. We don’t typically talk golf here at Faith & Family, but since Tiger’s personal breakdown has a whole lot to do with family, I feel like this topic might be fair game.
At his press conference on Monday, the following question and answer caught my attention:
Q. Your behavior, personal life before Thanksgiving, do you think it negatively impacted your play on the course at all? Could you have been playing better had you had more discipline in your personal life?
TIGER WOODS: I would like to say yes. I would be—certainly would have had—I would be more centered, more balanced, and that’s where I’m headed towards. That’s what I’m working towards each and every day. I meditate religiously again like I used to, going back to my roots with my Buddhism with my mom. I need to do these things the way I used to do it. And unfortunately I got away from that, and I just lost that and unfortunately also lost my life in the process.
Woods has stated that his wife and family will not be present this week at Augusta to cheer him on. Clearly, there is still much healing to do in their family relationship and our prayers for them should continue.
The golfers in my family are anxious to see Tiger return to golf and succeed - they don’t tend to be too rapped up in tabloid reports. In my home, the Tiger Woods “situation” has been fodder for conversation with my teenage sons and has brought up some great morality discussions. We’ve talked quite a lot about how the success ethic in today’s society can be disordered beyond repair.
My questions to you today include the following: Is it too early for Tiger to return to competitive golf? Have you had talks in your home about Tiger and his family? And do you think it matters this week if he wins the Masters, or has he already won or lost simply by returning to the golf course?
