Touching Fame, Teen-Style

Kateri is a big fan of the Eragon series of fantasy novels by Christopher Paolini. So much of a fan, in fact, that she wrote a letter to Paolini several months ago, telling him about her life as a homeschooler and requesting an autograph.
I encourage these kinds of letters and even dare to call them “school” sometimes. Nothing motivates a writing exercise quite like the potential of “touching fame” around here. There is an 8-year-old’s letter to Big Papi sitting in my outgoing mail right now, for example.
Anyway, back to Paolini. Because although these fan letters my kids write don’t always produce results, this one certainly did. Paolini, a former homeschooler himself, sent Kateri several autographed pictures, a personalized letter, and a list of “writing tips” he has put together for fans who ask about his writing process.
She was over the moon.
So thrilled.
Squealing, in fact. As only a 15-year-old fan girl can squeal.
She read through Paolini’s writing tips carefully and then came to tell me that the crazy idea I had—the one about the importance of writing from an outline—maybe wasn’t so crazy after all.
Thank you, Mr. Paolini, for backing up Mom. And for making my 15-year-old’s week. We’re fans for keeps now.
