Twitter Gets Trendy

It’s been a big week for the quirky social networking site Twitter.com. First came the ongoing news coverage of the “race” between celebrity Ashton Kutcher and CNN’s Breaking News Feed (think Anderson Cooper) to amass a million followers on Twitter. Kutcher ended up having to make good on his promise to donate 10,000 mosquito net beds to a World Malaria Day charity by beating CNN to the punch. Over the course of the past few days, CNN did regular updates throughout the day, asking viewers to follow them on the micro blogging site, but in the end, Ashton – a champion of new media and social networking – edged them out.
Today came the big news that Oprah is now Twittering. Her early tweets look to be similar to the mundane news many of us share on Twitter – things like a health update on her dog and her lunch order. I wonder if Oprah will actually continue to post updates herself, or if her staff will take on this task as yet another facet of the well-oiled Oprah machine.
I’m not a big Oprah fan. I don’t watch her show or pay much attention to her magazine, so I likely won’t join the ranks of the over 115,000 Twitter users who are already following her after only half a day. But in a way, I am kind of glad that she’s jumped into using my favorite social networking site.
I’ve long believed in the power of Twitter to build and sustain community. If you join the site, you will find a vibrant Catholic community that’s sure to edify, inspire and support you. Throughout the day, as I pop in periodically to check my friends, I’m reminded to pray for their intentions. I learn of breaking news in the Church from the many Catholic media organizations who are using Twitter so efficiently. I’ve made contacts around the world who have strengthened my desire to be a better wife, mom and Catholic.
So if Oprah’s joining Twitter inspires more people to jump online and begin “tweeting”, I think it’s a good thing. Whether you are new to Twitter or an established user, I hope you will consider following our Faith & Family Live! bloggers who are using the site:

I’d love to see more people following our blogging team than Oprah! While that’s unlikely, if you’re curious about Twitter and want to check it out today seems like the perfect day.
If you’re on Twitter, please drop a comment below with your user name so that I can make sure I’m following you. I’d also love to hear what you love (or hate) about Twitter and what impact you think Oprah’s jump into Twitter will have on the site.
