Vatican Book Giveaway

Win this gorgeous, informative book!

For the reader on your Christmas gift list, may I recommend this beautiful new volume from DK Publishing?

The Vatican: Secrets & Treasures of The Holy City takes you behind the scenes at the Vatican in glorious photographs.

Yes, it has a chronological list of popes. It also shows you the Vatican supermarket. Some of the treasures from the Vatican museum are photographed here for the first time. You can also see how the Swiss Guard uniforms get pressed.

It’s a delightful look at the holy and the humdrum inside the Vatican, and one of you can win it free!

There are six sections:

  • The Vatican Year, which highlights how the principal feasts of the liturgical year are celebrated in the Eternal City.
  • History of the Vatican, offering a visual timeline of the popes, their moral concerns and their achievements from Peter to Benedict XVI.
  • Art & Architecture, with the most complete photographic tour of St. Peter’s inside and out I’ve ever seen, plus lush pictures of the Vatican Gardens, the Vatican Museums and other Vatican buildings.
  • Daily Life Inside The Vaticanis a section I particularly liked. It’s an insider’s view of how things work—not just the papacy and the curia, but the post office, emergency services—you’ll even learn about the families of Swiss Guardsmen who live on site at the Vatican.
  • People is another delight. It takes a look at 12 inside-the-Vatican professions, including curator, choir boy and restorer of mosaics.
  • Treasures is a tour of the papal sacristy, with ornate papal vestments and gemstone inlaid chalices that were gifts of kings and queens in times past. This might be my favorite section, not only because the items themselves are beautiful, but because you learn so much about the celebration of the Mass throughout the centuries from it.
  • All the photos are well-labeled, with captions that are easy-to-read and informative, and the accompanying text is reverent, yet clear enough for non-Catholics to understand. I especially appreciated the warm tone throughout the book. Fr. Michael Collins has created a kind of love-letter to his former home; I think you’ll love it.
