Vatican VBS

A new VBS for Catholic families and parishes

With “back to school” season upon us, it may seem like a funny time to be talking about Vacation Bible School. But the truth of the matter is that this is the time of the year where parishes and homeschool groups are making their curriculum decisions for NEXT summer! So I wanted to share with you the good news I received from Susan Lawson, marketing director at www.GrowingWithTheSaints.com. Susan wrote me last week to share the good news about their newest program, due out for the summer of 2012 and being called “Don’t Miss the Bus! Climb Aboard the Vatican Express!” Here’s a blueprint:

Climb aboard The Vatican Express! Meet your tour guide, a member of the Swiss Guard and uncover the Vatican treasures. First stop…St. Peter’s Square!

*  Get to know St. Peter and find out how the Church started.
*  Read about Saint Jerome (who translated the Bible), and his friend, Lion.

FUN is just around the corner. Step into sensational skits, exciting Bible stories, creative crafts and amazing music!

Fasten your seatbelts for the ride of your life! All Aboard the Vatican Express.

For more details about this great new program, Call Susan for more information: office 864-599-5697 or cell 864-580-0237 or email susan@growingwiththesaints.com.

And while we’re on the topic of VBS, I would love to hear about what your family and parish did this summer? Did your children attend a VBS program at either your Catholic parish or a nearby Christian Church? What were some of the highlights for your family? What would you like to see in a specifically Catholic vacation bible school curriculum?

The program sounds wonderful! Thank you for passing it on, Lisa. God bless!

Lisa, this looks like a great program.  Our parish was blessed to be a pilot parish in our diocese (Peoria, IL) for Totus Tuus.  It started in Kansas—you can read more about it here: http://catholicdioceseofwichita.org/totus-tuus/totus-tuus-home.  Four young people—two young men (seminarians) and two young women, presented this program and did amazing work with the help of some teen & parent volunteers from the parish.  There was a K-6 program during the day, and 7-9th grade program at night.  All our children LOVED it, it was super easy on the parish.

We have done Totus Tuus at our church for the past 5 years and we LOVE it!!  I could go on and on about how wonderful it is, and the fruits I see coming from it.  This year I had several kids come in first thing in the morning, running down the hall, asking me, “Do we get to go to Mass today?”  (Daily Mass is part of the Totus Tuus program.)  It doesn’t get any better than that!!

We did SonSurf this year, which was ok as far as being fun for the kids and not bad/negative in terms of content, but not particularly Catholic or much of a learning experience for them (well, it was for my K son, but not my 4th grader).  I really wish we could do something like what you linked to, but I’m not sure it would fly with all parties involved in the decision making process.  The politics of parish are interesting - on one hand is the parish school who seems to lean heavily toward generic Christian content as well as more superficial treatment of the material and on the other the Faith Formation program that is much more interested in trying to figure out how to boost the kids’ Catholic identity as well as strengthen their faith.

I’ve toyed with the idea of trying to do a second VBS later in the summer and still within the parish to offer something to families that would be much more Catholic in content.  But I’m not sure I’m interested in that much work or wading that deeply into parish politics!!
