Video On!

I think we can all agree that technology is a mixed bag - like any neutral thing, it can be used for good or ill - but can I tell you what? Sometimes a particular item of technology makes me really glad to be raising my kids in 2011.
Currently, that item is the awesome Christmas present I got from my husband: a Flip video camera.
When I was a kid, video cameras were expensive monstrosities that parents brought out to film special occasions. My family didn’t even own one. By the time Camilla was born in 2006, things had improved, and the camera that my husband’s parents generously gave us is smallish and pretty easy to use. But it’s still an ordeal to get it out of the case, and it lights up and beeps to start recording and - this is the most frustrating part - the kids always notice it, stop whatever cute thing I’m trying to film them doing, and demand to play with the camera instead.
Enter Flip. The one my husband got me is significantly less expensive than our “big” video camera. It doesn’t have as many features, of course, but its convenience makes up for it. In the five weeks since Christmas, I’m sure I’ve taken more total video of the kids than I had in Blaise’s entire life before now.
Do the kids still want to play with it? Sure they do, but only when they notice I’m filming them - which usually takes a couple minutes, since the camera can be turned on and start recording in a mere four seconds, and without any beeps or lights.
I know video cameras are a luxury and I’m grateful that we can afford to have one. I know that in a few years I’ll be incredibly glad to have recorded so many hilarious and precious moments with my little ones. And right now I’m happy that technology makes it easier for me to do that!
