This week, Elizabeth and I are joined on the podcast (click here to listen or click on the player above) by special guest Mary DeTurris Poust, author of the new book Walking Together: Discovering the Catholic Tradition of Spiritual Friendship. In our first segment, we discuss the challenge of balancing social networking and “real life” friendships. How do you balance your relationships through social networks? Facebook can often “water down” friendships. We can have hundreds of “friends,” many of whom we don’t even know, and yet still feel isolated. A real spiritual friendship counters that with something eternal and intimate. And yet, how we can actually use the very technology that threatens to unravel the fabric of deep friendship to begin and sustain friendships amid the busyness of life?
This week’s Faith & Family Feature Product is Mary’s wonderful book Walking Together: Discovering the Catholic Tradition of Spiritual Friendship. This book makes a great inspirational read and would be a wonderful resource to share with friends, a bible study group, or moms group for special discussion.
In our final segment, we discuss developing spiritual companionship for our spiritual journeys. Even in a happy family/happy marriage we need others who give us spiritual support along the way. In particular, moms who are home with their kids all day, running from one place to another, need the friendship of others who are struggling to walk a spiritual path with very little free time or quiet time in their daily lives. Even saints had fellow travelers who walked the pilgrim path with them. What are some practical ways to maintain those friendships?
