We Are The Champions

Like families the world over, this week we are addicted to the television.
Whatever is happening competition-wise over in Beijing, we are watching. Swimming? Check. Gymnastics? Check. Beach volleyball in the pouring rain? Check. We are glued, and the only time we change the channel is to see if the other channel covering the Olympics has anything better to offer.
We love the Olympics! And like families the world over, in this house, we are all Olympians.
The coffee table in the front room is moved to the side and during each commercial interruption, the boys race to the open space to exhibit their latest skills. While they don’t exactly resemble the sports we have just watched, the boys seem to be inspired by the agility and performance of the athletes on TV. The older two, it seems, have plans to medal in martial arts. The younger two are torn between being gold-medal gymnasts or possibly bounty hunters.
Tonight I was on the phone with a friend who has four girls. She said they were all in the front yard during a commercial break while the girls did front flips and somersaults. “Don’t do that on the concrete,” she hollered to one of them, “you’ll get hurt.” They too were inspired by what they saw.
“I think it’s contagious,” I told my friend. This morning while I was getting Henry ready for Mass, he was wriggling around, refusing to cooperate.
“I looked at those buttons,” I told her, “took a deep breath and just went for it. I wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
Gold medal in Baby Dressing, here I come.
