What Can We Give?

I must admit, I haven’t felt much like dreaming about fashion while so many are hurting in Haiti.
Even though I know there are suffering people at all times all over the world, for some reason this latest tragedy has hit me particularly hard. All I’ve been able to think about is how much I want to help the people of Haiti and how sad I am that I have so little to give.
Yesterday, while praying for the earthquake victims, I realized that though I may not be able to donate much monetarily I do have plenty of clothes and other supplies in my home that could be parted with and sent to the people of Haiti
I made a few calls in an attempt to find out how and where to deliver our things. Unfortunately, no one seems to be accepting anything other than monetary donations currently. Because of the size and seriousness of this crisis, the best way to help the people of Haiti is to fund charities and allow them to buy what they know the people of Haiti are most in need of. Otherwise, the charities would be forced to divert their resources to accepting, sorting, storing and transporting other sorts of donations and time is of the essence.
I still plan to go through our closets and storage bins to gather materials suitable for donation. When charities are again accepting such things I will deliver our boxes. Perhaps our clothing will end up in Haiti or maybe it will end up in my own community. Who knows? What I do know is that there are always people in need. The earthquake in Haiti was a wake-up call for me. I am fortunate to be able to say that I can live with less. Not everyone can.
If any of you are aware of ways in which those of us who cannot donate much monetarily can help the people of Haiti please leave a comment. For now I will pray and fast, offer up my very small sufferings, and resolve to do more for all those in need, at home and abroad.
Holy Virgin Mary, you are reigning in glory, with Jesus, your Son.
Remember us in our sadness. Look kindly on all who are suffering
or fighting against any difficulty.
Have pity on those who are separated from someone they love.
Have pity on the loneliness of our hearts.
Have pity on the weakness of our faith and love.
Have pity on those who are weeping, on those who are praying, on those who are fearful.
Holy Mother, please obtain for all of us hope and peace with justice.
Amen.
