I typically spend around $100 a week for our family of four. This includes household items like detergent and diapers. I can scale back and spend less at times, but $100 seems to be pretty doable. I try to plan my meals for the week based on what is on sale that week, and we eat mainly fruit/homemade treats for snacks, to cut down on processed foods (which add up and are usually not nutritious). Thanks for the interesting article, and kudos to you for the hard work of raising a large family!

When last weekend’s Homemaking Coffee Talk turned to the subject of grocery budgets, I was very interested to see the variety of responses. It’s amazing how much food habits and what is considered “normal” can vary from family to family and from region to region.
That variety also happens to be the subject of Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, a photo book by author-journalist Peter Menzel.
Menzel traveled the world and spent time sharing meals with 30 different families in 24 different countries. As you can see on this page which shows three different families’ weekly food consumption, the differences are astounding.
A few months ago, Rachel suggested that we bloggers might like to take on a grocery budget challenge based on this article about feeding a family of four on $100 per week.
That challenge works out to spending $25 per person per week, which would put my family of ten at a budget of $250 per week. Even though I do my best to be budget conscious, we currently spend about $75-100 more than that, so sticking to a smaller budget would be a significant challenge.
I plan to use this post as “research” before taking on a grocery challenge myself.

$25 a week per person is a bit slim. The only way I think this will work well is if there is a good effort in menu planning with foods that are both healthy and taste great. There will probably be few convenience or junk foods prepared. Coupons are good for getting a discount on kids snacks. If eating organic foods is important buying in bulk may help.
