What Do You Put In These Things?

Culinary Wednesday

After putting on a very satisfactory July 4th barbecue, with leftovers to last much of the week, I’m really not feeling the need to try new recipes.

But here is something simple that might help some of us moms this summer ...

On my next trip to the dollar store, I’m going to pick up some popsicle molds and start experimenting. Back when all seven kids were at home, these molds were essential equipment.

The departure of 3 grown children increased our prosperity such that I had begun buying our popsicles again. But I guess I am feeling nostalgic for the old days.

I’m also wondering whether I can do something more interesting than just filling these up with pop or lemonade. Pureed fruit, perhaps? Frozen smoothies? Margaritas on a stick for the grownups?  Let’s hear how you ladies like to chill out with homemade popsicles.

One more thing. Maybe there’s a better mold out there than what I’d find at the dollar store. (The ones pictured here are from Williams-Sonoma.) If you are particularly pleased with the popsicle molds you have, let us know where you got them.

Oh memories! My Mom used to put chocolate pudding or an orange-yogurt combo in them.  So good.

I have molds from the $1bin at Target that work well, but the ones I got from the $1 section at Michael’s don’t work real well. I love the idea of margarita’s on a stick!

To make frozen maragritas, you use Mike’s Hard Lemonade margaritas.  If you make your own, the amount alcholo will not allow it to freeze.  Or get the maragrita flavored mix from Crysal light & freeze that (much fewer calories!)

We use: OJ, yogurt, root beer mixed with vanilla ice cream (root beer float on a stick!), pudding, anything mixed with fresh fruit. It’s a perfect summer treat!

I gave up on cheap molds—too too frustrating for me.  Now I use Orka silicone popsicle molds that I got from Amazon.  They are so much easier to use!  I like making fruit creamsicles by mixing fruit juices with vanilla yogurt.  I just stir them together with a spoon, not even completely mixing them together, and they come out swirly and pretty.

We have put smoothies in there.  Right now I am pregnant and keep things as simple as possible:  I make a glass of Shaklee Performance (It’s like a Gatorade powder w/o the artificial colors) and make popscicles out of that.  DS likes it, plus I figure it’s a good thirst quencher when he’s outside sweating up a storm.

We received the Zoku Popsicle maker for Christmas and we love it! You keep it in the freezer and when you want Popsicles you simply pull it out of the freezer, pour in your fruit juice and Popsicles in about 6 minutes!!!! You can make really fancy ones with it as well, but my girls like it plain! And the plus side… no real down time ( I never remember to put the molds in the freezer the night before.

I recently got a set at Target and have a set from when I was a kiddo - I totally prefer the molds that are round.  I find the popsicles come out easier when I can twist them.  Yes, chocolate pudding is amazing; I also like to use juice, or even a mix of juice and club soda (makes them softer, I think), and leftover smoothies are good too.

thanks for all the suggestions—chocolate pudding sounds wonderful!  I never thought of that.  We used orange juice, yogurt, and my favorite, Hawaiian punch.

I have a cheap set that I bought at Target a few years ago, and it seam to do the trick. I like to do a yogurt/ fruit puree, with a little honey for sweetener, if needed.

*seems*  I think I should go to bed…

I like to make a big batch of smoothies using fresh bananas, frozen strawberries, peaches or pineapple, and juice.  We drink some then freeze the rest for treats later.  I got a set of “rocket” pop molds from Walmart, but they don’t release easily.  Next time I will get the rounded ones.

We sometimes used jello (or half Jello/half juice) in the molds - it helps cut down on dripping.

Any smoothie recipe freezes very well. Or Stoneyfield french vanilla yogurt studded with mini chocolate chips.

My kids also like watermelon pops - I basically scoop watermelon into the blender and give it a whirl. I have also jammed the molds full of seedless grapes, topped it off with water and the kids love those, too.

Thanks everyone for lots of marvellous ideas. I’m going to buy an extra set (rounded ones!) so I can try out lots of these right away.

My favorite popsicle recipe of all time is for Blueberry popsicles.  It takes some work, but it tastes like frozen blueberry pie!!
Mix 2 cups blueberries, 1/2 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan.  Bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer about 5 minutes, until berries have popped open.  Remove from heat and stir in 1 tsp lemon juice.  Pour into molds.  Makes 6-8.

i bought a set of 6 popsicle molds @ crate & barrel http://www.crateandbarrel.com/kitchen-and-food/prep-utensils/set-of-6-ice-pop-molds/s165690

we’ve made homemade popsicles out of leftover punch, yogurt, pudding… i got a couple of books at the library full of popsicle recipes & of course there are lots of recipes on the web…
