What Month Is It, Again?

We were still in swine-flu quarantine over last weekend, but on Wednesday I made it to the grocery store and had the brilliant idea of checking to see if there was any leftover Halloween candy on sale.
A mere four days after Halloween, all evidence of it was completely gone. There was, however, plenty of Christmas candy.
I glanced around and realized that the store was loaded with Christmas decorations and merchandise.
Then this afternoon Camilla was playing with the koi pond application on my iPod touch, and I noticed that it has switched over to “holiday mode.” The little fish were swimming around amidst holly and candy canes.
I know it’s cliché to rant about how early the retail industry starts “celebrating” Christmas, so I’m not ranting exactly, but wow. Christmas decorations up already! We’re in “holiday mode”! An entire sixth of the year now dedicated to celebrating December 25th!
Maybe it’s okay to rant a tiny bit, as long as I’m cheerful about it, which I am. I wish Advent (not to mention Thanksgiving) got more attention, but truth be told, a little part of me loves the garish spinning aluminum Christmas trees that top displays all over retail world during this season.
I also realized today that there are only 49 days until Christmas. Perhaps this year I’ll get inspired and start my shopping early. If I could check off all the boxes on my “to buy” list, maybe I’d be able to enjoy all this precipitous celebration with a little more cheer.
