When I Grow Up

I want to be just like my mom!

I’m feeling a bit blue this afternoon, as I just delivered my mom to the airport after a fun packed two week visit.  I’m missing her already, and her flight has just departed!

Unlike those of you with family close by, my family is scattered all over the country.  Nana and Gramps currently reside in Gulfport, Mississippi, so her visits are precious times.  I can mark the passing of the years by looking at photos from her visits and watching my children grow and develop.

This picture is my favorite from this year’s visit, since it so perfectly captures my mom’s spirit!  How many grandmothers would learn to play Guitar Hero just so they could spend some quality time with their grandsons?

Along with gaming, Nana baked banana bread with Adam, watched the boys play a few Irish music gigs, cheered Eric at his big concert, and did countless loads of laundry.  She taught me how to make a better pot roast, helped me organize some long standing “to do” items, and joined me at Adam’s school masses.

Our visits aren’t usually filled with cultural items or fancy outings.  As much as I’d love to treat my mom to a fancy tea or spend hours shopping, more frequently than not she simply blends into the fabric of our crazy life and makes it all the sweeter by her presence.

No wonder her sons-in-law argue about who gets to host her next!  Her daughters, their wives, are so much more content and nicer when she’s around!

Well now it’s time to share Nana with the rest of the family.  My daddy misses her and wants to spend some time with her before she embarks on her next mission of mercy.

Lots of people dream about the type of person they’d like to be when they grow up - I don’t have to look very far for a role model to emulate.

When I grow up, if I ever do, I want to be just like my mom!

Great post—always encouraging to hear about healthy, functional families.

Rock on, Grandma! What a testament to the love she has for her grandkids.

That is so sweet.
She sounds like one fun lady.

Lisa this is a great post.  I wish I had a role model like that to look up to and emulate.  I look to our Holy Family at this point in my life.  When I grow up I hope that I have given my daughters something to be proud of and look up to as your mom has for you.  Beautiful.
