Which Came First?

turning a baby corner

We had a chicken costume in 3-6 months size, and we have two babies, so what could we do but make an egg?

Actually, I wasn’t planning on dressing the babies up at all, since basic non-frivolous tasks take all my energy these days. Kids demand costumes, but babies don’t care, so why bother?

But we only have two babies once. One chance to make a hilarious double costume so we can enjoy the photos for years to come. I had an extra white pillowcase and some batting and yellow fabric, my crafty sister helped, and voila! We had an egg.

Bryan held them both as I tried to snap a good picture before we took the big kids out trick-or-treating, and as I watched Linus the chicken’s and Ambrose the egg’s sweet faces, it occurred to me: it’s starting to get better.

We’ve slogged through almost six months of life with our little dudes, and most of it has been - at best - bearable. This month, though, we’ve packed away the bouncy seats and brought up the exersaucer, the Bumbo seat, the high chairs. Ambrose rolls over regularly, and Linus isn’t far behind. They meet our eyes, giggle as we play with them, reach for toys.

There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. The egg and his brother the chicken (who was born first, in case you were wondering, not that we were intending any kind of broad existential statement with that choice) gave me my first glimpse of it.

Deep breath of relief.

Or should I say laugh of relief? That chicken/egg combo is enough to make me laugh any day.

Brilliant!
This year I was looking through our box of past costumes.  I remembered back to each child wearing the costume.  I have a 12 year old girl, 10 year old boy, 6 year old girl, and 2 year old boy.  The first few Halloweens I tried to dress the oldest two in somewhat matching costumes.  She wanted to be a firefighter so I dressed him as a dalmation dog.  She wanted to be a princess and he actually loved dragons.  She wanted to be a princess again and he liked the frog (until he actually put it on and looked in the mirror before walking out the door.  Then suddenly he didn’t like the frog eyes).  It brings back funny memories of treat filled nights.  As I was searching through the box I couldn’t find the dragon.  I settled on a soldier look for my two year old.  We have plenty of swords and helmets around.  My oldest wanted to dress in her renaisance outfit we got for her this year.  My 10 year old found a viking helmet (with blond braides attached) and pulled out a sword as well.  My six year old was torn between being a princess and a cheerleader.  She finally decided to be a princess all dressed in white (not sure if the outfit would come back that color by the end of the street much less the end of the night).  As I pulled out the flashlights and replaced batteries, my 12 year old helped the others to dress.  Boy was I happily surprised when she brought down the 2 year old dressed as the dragon.  She had found the outfit in the corner of a closet.  So once again we had a princess and a dragon.  But this year they would also be accompanied by a renaisance lady and a viking warrior.

Glad to hear you are feeling the relief from the intensity of 2 at once.  Our boy/girl twins just turned 1 and although I can’t say it gets much easier (there are always challenges at every stage, aren’t there?!) it does get much more fun and more rewarding as their little sweet personalities develop.  Blessings to your family!

Glad to hear things are getting just a little easier! My 3-year old was a unicorn. I got a flower costume for our newborn. The first thing out of her mouth was, “Unicorns eat flowers.” Great.

Hysterical!

Arwen, they are so adorable!  My twins had the cutest matching penguin costumes when they were 14 months old.  I thought the first 4 months were the most difficult, then gradually got easier.  Some of that, though, was Mommy getting trained.  smile

Hey Arwen, keep your sunny side up!  Sorry, just couldn’t resist.  God bless your family.

Arwen, as a mother of seven year old twins I can really tell you that it gets easier every day.  It says a lot that you did find the time and energy to do the costumes, my kids were reminiscing about Halloween and their first costumes and I had to admit to my twins that they did not have costumes for their first halloween, it was all I could do to get the older ones outfitted that year!  My boy and girl are great friends, they are better for having each other, and they continue to keep the rest of us in stitches.  God Bless you!

“But we only have two babies once.”

Heh, heh, heh. Keep talkin’ that way, Sister.

We have twin boys (our 4th and 5th of 6), and I read your posts with such joy - it is such an intense time with 2 little babies.  Even though we do not know each other, know that you are in my prayers.  smile  You have a place in my heart with those little ones, and we are also MIers. smile  Anyway, when ours were almost 2 yrs old, we somehow had a small gorilla costume (not sure where it came from), so we dressed the other one in yellow with a yellow hat - viola! : gorilla and banana.  take care!
