Pack a Perfect Lunch
by Cheryl Luptowski in Health on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 6:00 AM
Preparing healthy snacks and lunches can be tricky. Aside from packing healthy items for our kids to eat, it’s also important to know how to properly pack and prepare these items to help avoid food-borne illness. Many of the items we send our children to school with sit unrefrigerated for hours before being consumed.
As a home safety expert at NSF International (a non for profit, public health and Safety Company), helping parents keep back-to-school safe and healthy is part of my job.

Everybody deals with anxiety and depression sometimes, but some of us have a particularly difficult time in managing everyday anxieties. Here is a brief list of techniques you can use to help manage your most persistent fears and every day anxieties.
Divide and conquer. When facing a current or upcoming task that overwhelms you with a lot of anxiety, the first thing you can do is to divide the task into a series of smaller steps. Completing these smaller tasks one at a time will make the stress... READ MORE
Don't Invite the Germs
by Cheryl Luptowski in Health on Friday, July 01, 2011 6:00 AM
Whether camping, going to the beach or park for the day, or just hanging out in your own back yard, picnics are a fun way to enjoy eating out of doors. Unfortunately, summer weather also creates the perfect opportunity bacteria to grow on foods that aren’t handled properly.
To help protect your family from foodborne illness, practice these safe-food handling tips:
Pack properly. Put perishable foods (i.e. hot dogs, cut fruits and salads) in individual containers on the bottom of the cooler with... READ MORE
A Hidden Kind of Suffering
by Tony Rossi in Health on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 12:00 PM
“Infertility is one of the most painful things I have ever seen a couple or woman suffer with,” says Dr. Anne Mielnik, Director and co-founder of Gianna: The Catholic Healthcare Center for Women which opened less than a year ago in New York City. “For most of them, it is a hidden suffering.”
Dr. Mielnik is doing her best to heal that pain, but unlike many doctors, she’s doing it in a way that’s completely pro-life.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) has become the default method by which infertility is... READ MORE
8 Ways to Be a Fit Mom
by Kate Wicker in Health on Thursday, July 01, 2010 6:00 AM
I started running when I was 15 and soon became hooked on fitness. In college, I taught aerobics and worked out daily. After graduation, I started long distance running and enjoyed social jogs with friends as well as solo long runs where I had time to think. When I trained for my first marathon, I remember promising myself that for each child I brought into this world, I’d lace up my running shoes and train for another long-distance event.
Of course, I also promised I’d never serve my children... READ MORE
5 Ways to Soothe
by Dan Connors in Health on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 6:00 AM
My children come to me numerous times each day for comfort and succor over their aches and pains, accidents and mishaps. I keep a handy set of remedies for these incidents, and find these to be among the most useful:
1. Arnica Gel
Arnica is great for bumps bruises, sprains and strains. I buy it from BOIRON, in the gel form. This is especially helpful when someone smashes a finger in a door. I find it does increase the pain from an injury initially for a moment or two but after application within... READ MORE

Ah, summer! The sun’s out. The weather’s warm. And the kids are outside, living it up.
Spending time outdoors is a great way to keep kids active and content during the dog days of summer, but it can be a jungle out there.

Splashing Safely
by Michelle Reitemeyer in Health on Friday, May 28, 2010 6:00 AM
Down here in Georgia, the pools opened at the beginning of May. As a mother of six young children, four of whom I do not trust in the deep end, going to the pool can be a frightening experience. In fact, within minutes, our first trip to the pool this year led to a very near tragedy. Besides many prayers of thanksgiving, I have spent much time reviewing what went wrong and how to avoid this situation again.
We had planned for a day at the beach, which is different from going to the pool. I had not... READ MORE
Are You a Health Gambler?
by Tammy Darling in Health on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 6:00 AM
Intrinsically we know that a lack of exercise and proper nutrition is detrimental to our health, and yet we tend to take the gamble anyway. When we give little thought to our health — what we eat and how much, whether or not we exercise — we are essentially gambling with the life God gave us.
A haphazard approach to our health now will cause us to miss our preferred future—one full of strength and energy and long life.
If, like me, you have been gambling with your health, it’s not too late to make... READ MORE
Beat the Baby Blues
by Kate Wicker in Health on Thursday, March 18, 2010 6:00 AM
After giving birth to my first two children, I found myself basking in pure baby bliss and couldn’t understand how any mom could possibly suffer from the “baby blues.”
Then I had my third baby.
I remember the moment I realized something wasn’t right. An acquaintance asked me, “So how’s the transition been going from two to three kids?”
I opened my mouth, but no words would come out. My face crumpled. My arms ached, and it felt like I was carrying dead weight, not a wiggly, happy baby.
Then I started... READ MORE
