Home-schoolers Want to Play

one step closer

Home-schoolers in Virginia wanting to play on public high school sports teams are getting closer to their goal—the Virginia House of Delegates passed the “Tim Tebow” law, as it’s being called, and the vote will now go before the Senate.

Our friend and colleague Elizabeth Foss was front and center in the debate—that’s her son pictured (this picture also ran front page at the New York Times coverage... READ MORE

Happy Groundhog’s Day!

I bet there are those among us who celebrate this day—are you one of them? Does your family do anything special to celebrate the day when we may or may not be facing six more weeks of cold winter weather?

There are lots of fun activities to celebrate this day. Did you know you can make a Groundhog out of meatloaf? Clever, I’d say. If that’s not your speed, I bet your kids would... READ MORE

50-Degree Skiing?

Uh, not so much

My parents-in-law own a condo near one of Michigan’s best ski hills. Yes, I realize that’s like saying “one of Kansas’s best beaches,” and with just 500 vertical feet it is fairly unimpressive as a ski resort. It still has enough runs to keep us busy for a weekend, though, and we enjoy our visits each winter.

Generally we go up in January and in March. In January we’re lucky if the temperature is... READ MORE

Extracurricular Balancing Act

How do you keep it all under control?

Yesterday was “one of those days”.  Busy with work, tired from a full weekend, and burdened by a heavy “to do” list, I glanced at my phone at 1:38 pm and saw the following text:

Forgot my flute.  Can you get it here by 2:00 for rehearsal?

The kid in question, the flute-forgetter, is old enough to know better and too old to be bailed out.  But because I love him and could think of nothing more refreshing... READ MORE

Entertaining Toddlers

any no-fail remedies out there?

On our trip to the funeral this week, I did not think through keeping two-year-old Henry entertained for the ride. He did okay on the way there, but the ride home was brutal.

“I want down,” he would say. Every five minutes.

I offered him the few board books we had in the car. Then I let him borrow his brothers’ Where’s Waldo books. Then I started grabbing random found objects in the hopes that something... READ MORE

Mary and the Boys

How does a Knight honor the Queen?

Today is the birthday of Mary the Mother of Jesus.

As I pondered the ways our household could honor the Queen of Heaven on her special day, most of my ideas involved crowns and flowers. I thought how nice it would be to make a crown of flowers for our backyard Marian statue, or how lovely it would be to collect a vase of flowers for our Marian statue in the front room.

The truth is beyond saying a... READ MORE

Fun with Toddlers

Let's share ideas

Henry is 19-months-old! His next oldest brother is about to be seven. It’s been a while since I’ve had a toddler so I was thinking we could discuss fun activities for this age. It’s a tricky age because a 19-month-old is now too big for a lot of activities but still too small for many others.

So! What works for you? This morning we tried water colors, which was fun (turned into gigantic mess, but that’s cool) and there is also block sorting and hmmm, climbing on the dining room table and also getting into my make-up.

Any other ideas for good activities that can occupy a toddler while mommy leaves the room for a second or two?

Beat the Winter Blues

5 ways to cure cabin fever

It’s February—technically the shortest, but emotionally the longest month of the year.

It’s prime cabin fever season. Are you feeling it?

This time of year, it’s easy to grow tired of the indoors. The holidays are behind us, the novelty of cold and snow (if you have it) has worn off, and the days are dark.
