On being forced to slow down

Being a mother is a busy, busy job.

My husband and I try to build a certain amount of slow, quiet time into our lives. (My theory is that God must think this is important, or he wouldn’t have designed children to need more sleep than adults!) As long as our routine is plugging along, I get enough slowing-down to keep myself from being frazzled and out of control.

But still: busy, busy, busy. Except... READ MORE

Doing or Being?

What de-stresses you on vacation?

We’ve been on vacation since last week, and we are having such a relaxing time.

The first time I went on vacation with a family other than my own, I was fifteen. It shocked me to discover that my friend’s family did a big activity on every single day of their trip. For us, vacationing meant spending entire afternoons reading or playing games or running around outside. We’d do one or two sightseeing... READ MORE

Keep On Moving It

My baby does

Remember when I asked if any of you had noticed a correlation between your children’s activity levels before and after they were born?  The general consensus was that there probably is one.

Now that I’ve got my own data point on the subject, I thought I’d report back and share my findings.

My findings: YES.  There is a connection.  Babies who move a lot in utero keep it up after they are born.

Our... READ MORE

Children Can Celebrate Year of the Priest

Free resource for families

Rachel Watkins, the fab mom who brought us Little Flowers Girls Clubs, has put together a new resource for Catholic families celebrating the Year of the Priest.

Says Rachel: “This new activity sheet is available as an absolutely free download to any family looking for concrete ways in which to celebrate this great year. It gives ideas for families, clubs, or individuals to celebrate this wonderful year and includes an opportunity to award certificates of completion and/or medals if desired.”

Read more about it and get the free download at the Ecce Homo Press website.

And while your family is learning about and praying for our priests this year, don’t forget to take advantage of the opportunity for a Plenary Indulgence during the Year of the Priest. Go get some graces!

Wake Up Call

Sometimes God gets my attention the only way He can

Do you ever get the feeling God is trying to get your attention?

I got that feeling yesterday afternoon. Right about the time I found myself lying face down on my kitchen tiles, gasping in pain.

I had been rushing again.

I think God does not like it when I rush too much. It’s a very bad habit of mine to attempt to cram too much activity, too much thought, too much stuff into my too short days and... READ MORE

Moving It

Does in utero activity continue?

Today while I waited for the caffeine from my morning cup of tea to kick in, I sat with my prayer book and tried to concentrate on the prayers from the office.

In addition to my usual distraction in the form of my daughter (“No, Mama, want a different liberry book!”) I had an extra distraction in the form of my son, who had decided to use my prayer time to practice for his one-man acrobatics show.... READ MORE
