Benedict the XVI is a wonderful teacher and I love it when he preaches on the significance of the symbols of the liturgy.
He did that this morning in his homily for Ash Wednesday.

I took a deep breath before walking into the grocery store this afternoon. I pinched my cheeks and smoothed my hair and stole one more glance at myself in glass doors to verify that yes, I still had an enormous black smudge on my forehead.

Ash Wednesday With The Pope

Pope Benedict XVI received his ashes this morning.
Two Roman traditions for Ash Wednesday:
In Italy, ashes are sprinkled on the top of the head instead of “crossed” onto the forehead.
