Series Love

What are your favorite book-sets?

Do you ever get asked what your favorite book is?

For me, that’s a hard question. Pick a favorite? Out of the many, many wonderful stories that have been written and published? ONE favorite book?

Nope, can’t do it.

But one of the things that I always think about when I try to come up with an answer is this: my favorite books are not single books, they’re series. (Serieses?)

I get attached to the people... READ MORE

Prayer in the Digital Age

A "must read" for today's wired Catholic!

Later in the week, I’ll be excited to share with you the continuing adventures I’ve been enjoying for the past few days. But today, I want to interrupt my travelogue to tell you about an interview I’m sharing this week with my good friend and Danielle’s (and my) radio producer extraordinaire, Matt Swaim. Matt is the author of the brand new book Prayer in the Digital Age.

I’ve known Matt for a few... READ MORE

What The Pope Has In Common With Danielle, Lisa & Rachel

Authors often talk about the pleasure of seeing their works in print for the first time. Here’s video of Pope Benedict being presented with versions of his latest volume of Jesus of Nazareth in different languages.

I think it’s fun to hear the Germans cooing with him over the audio version in his native tongue!

Are you reading this latest volume—which you probably know is about the events of Holy Week?

One for Mystery Readers

A favorite author: Charlotte MacLeod

A couple years ago, I mentioned my favorite mystery novelist, Dorothy L. Sayers.

Any mystery lovers out there want to talk mysteries again?

Along with Sayers, G.K. Chesterton, author of the famous Father Brown stories, is a top-notch mystery writer. P.D. James is also excellent. And I’m a fan of the culinary mysteries of Diane Mott Davidson - they’re not the same caliber as those other authors, but... READ MORE

Come Say Hi!

If you live near Athens, Georgia and have the hankering, I’ll be speaking at the Alumni Authors Showcase this Thursday, October 14 at 4 p.m. I would love to see you there!

(And I have it on good authority that fellow Faith & Family writer Kate Wicker will be in the audience, so two-for-one!)

Touching Fame, Teen-Style

my 15-year-old fan girl

Kateri is a big fan of the Eragon series of fantasy novels by Christopher Paolini. So much of a fan, in fact, that she wrote a letter to Paolini several months ago, telling him about her life as a homeschooler and requesting an autograph.

I encourage these kinds of letters and even dare to call them “school” sometimes. Nothing motivates a writing exercise quite like the potential of “touching fame”... READ MORE

Fully Alive!

Meeting Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcak!

This week’s conference experience has been full of blessings, large and small.  Among the greatest has been the chance to meet a few of my favorite authors and speakers in person.  On Wednesday, I couldn’t write fast enough during Teresa Tomeo’s keynote address.  And today, I had to really stop from looking like a giddy fool when I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcak of the Pastoral Solutions Institute. ... Transforming Novels

What book is important to you?

I was about six years old the first time I pulled The Lord of the Rings off the bookshelf. Not to read it, of course - at that age I still considered Little Women intimidatingly long - but to page through it looking for instances of the word “Arwen” because it was exciting to see my name printed in a grown-up book. Over the next few years I spent many a happy hour that way.

My parents are big fans... READ MORE
