Simpler Than Pie

Make your apples into a tart!

Last week Daria mentioned apple pie and I sighed a little. I will probably get some pie this year when my mom or my sister makes it, but I have no time to make it myself.

Luckily, I remembered how much I love this easy tart recipe. I shared it last summer as a recipe for peach tart, and this is a slight adaptation for apple season. I think it’s perfect - crumbly crust and tender baked apples in sweet... READ MORE

Pumpkin Joy

It's almost fall, y'all

This Friday marks the first day of Autumn. Hooray!

The bad news is lots of rain is having an effect on pumpkin production.

The good news is you can get pumpkins in a variety of forms. So let’s focus on the good!

What are a few of your favorite pumpkin things?

Around here, I love:

1. Pumpkin spice candles

2. Starbucks pumpkin spice latte (I usually get one, because it starts to taste like pumpkin bread... READ MORE

Pretty for Fall

needing autumn decoration inspiration

In 2008 we went on vacation in the beginning of October and I loved the lobby of the hotel where we stayed. It felt incredibly cozy to me. It took me a while to figure out why: it was decorated for fall.

I really like to be out and about during December, when holiday decorations are up. The whole world feels cozy and Christmas-y then, even if it is actually Advent. I love the feel of my own house... READ MORE

Dressed for Autumn

What do you wear in the cooler weather?

Summer is officially coming to a close here in Michigan. Last Sunday we sweated through Mass, this weekend we had to bring jackets.

I abhor the heat of summer, so I’m thrilled that cooler weather is on its way. We’ll still have some hot days, but for the most part those are over until next year.

One of my favorite things about fall is the clothes. Since our resident fashion blogger is on maternity... READ MORE

Ending Autumn Tastily

with homemade pumpkin-apple butter

While Rachel’s been sadly taking down her autumn decorations, I’ve been dealing with the edible remains of the fall season. This weekend I made stock out of our turkey carcass, and being kitchen-frugal like that always inspires me to do more.

Back in October when we carved big pumpkins, I bought two pie pumpkins for Camilla and her cousin to decorate with washable markers. I’d intended to use them... READ MORE

Pretty Fall Picture

Celebrating the season outdoors

We’ve had unseasonably high temperatures in Michigan this week - in the mid 50s, and usually it’s in the 40s by now - so my sister and I took our kids outside and spent several hours in the yard enjoying the last of fall’s leaf-play time.

The children loved it, especially the three-year-olds, who took turns raking leaves with our child-sized rake and who most definitely did not want to come inside when it was time. I snapped about a hundred pictures by which to remember the afternoon. Not that I’m bound to forget it any time soon!

How have you been enjoying fall where you are?

(The photo on this post is of my little Blaise, on the right, terrorizing his cousin Matthew.)

Fall, In Love

A delicious season

Today is the official First Day of Fall! If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, Fall began at 5:18 p.m. this afternoon.

I happened to look down at my watch at that exact moment and thought to myself “Happy Fall! Now if only I wasn’t sweating outside while wearing shorts!”

As a life-long Southerner, I know this is just part of the drill. And even though it’s still warm here during the day, there is... READ MORE

Recipes for Fall Feasts

sharing the wealth

In my recent post about our upcoming Oktoberfest, Tiffany asks:

“Would you be willing to share what is on your menu for your Oktoberfest? It sounds like it would be a fun way to celebrate fall!”

It sure is and I sure will. Our Oktoberfest is a traditional gathering of friends and family. We carve pumpkins, play horseshoes, drink beer, and give the kids lots of cotton candy and other treats.

Dan’s... READ MORE

Hello, Fall!

Summer's end brings new beginnings

In the movie You’ve Got Mail, the two main characters (who have met online) are discussing by email how much they love the season of autumn.  And Tom Hanks’s character writes to Meg Ryan’s, “I would send you a bouquet of newly-sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”

I have always thought this a charming idea.  This time of year, give me a bouquet of sharp pencils and a fresh notebook,... READ MORE
