Little Girl Love

My daughter welcomes a new cousin!

This week I had an awesome privilege: the chance to be present at the birth of my very first niece.

Only one of my siblings is married, and Bryan’s an only child, so my sister’s kids are (so far) my sole chance at aunt-hood. She has two boys already and I’d have loved another one just as much, but I am thrilled that Branwen had a girl instead.

(I’m already plotting matching Christmas dresses for our... READ MORE

Baby Out or Baby In?

How do you feel about the end of pregnancy?

My sister is pregnant. Fully pregnant, since she was due this past Saturday.

Her first baby was a month early and her second eight days late. With this third baby, she was hoping to go early again, but no dice. She seems resigned to her baby’s late-ish arrival, but I know she’s greeting each morning wishing it will be the day.

I have no experience with this, since my babies were born at 10 days and... READ MORE

Jennifer Aniston and Me

Please come visit me at the Washington Post!

I am pleased to share the news that I will be serving as a panelist in the On Faith section of the Washington Post.

Today I have a column up where I take on Jennifer Aniston’s recent dismissive comments about the importance of fathers. I hope you’ll come check me out in this new spot and consider leaving some thoughtful feedback from a Catholic perspective.

Lovely Pro-Life Lullaby

'Angel in the Waters' meets music

Angel in the Waters, the sweet pro-life picture book written by Regina Doman and illustrated by Ben Hatke, has been a favorite in our house for years. So I was happy to see this video on YouTube, featuring illustrations from the book with a pro-life lullaby (words and music by Topy Lozano). Very sweet.

Anyone who is not familiar with Angel in the Waters can read it online here. Sophia Institute Press is also running a promotion right now where you can get a free hard copy of the book. Get the details here.

Keep It On!

How have you dealt with diaper-removing babies?

Blaise toddled past me, as he often does, and I noticed him out of the corner of my eye.

It took a few seconds… and then my head whipped around. Because the kid was not wearing a diaper.

We are not particularly uptight about cleanliness in our household, but we have to draw the line somewhere, and in the past we have always drawn it in a place that results in our non-potty-trained children wearing... READ MORE

Pretty… Boys?

When dress-up goes weird

A college friend of mine came from a family of six girls followed by two boys.

She told me a story of a time her father came home and his son tripped into the room to meet him. He’d been playing dress-up with his sisters, and he was decked out in a skirt, heels, and jewelry: the whole dress-up package.

Apparently this kind of dress-up was a common occurrence in their home (with six girls, of course... READ MORE

A Baby's Baby

The cycle continues

Camilla runs past me and I pull her in for a hug, which she loves.

She kicks her feet and giggles delightedly as I nuzzle her neck. I whisper, “I love you, baby girl.”

Suddenly she’s serious, twisting to meet my eyes with her wide ones. “No, Mom. I’m a big girl!”

(“Mom!” It just kills me.)

“Of course you are, sweetie, but you’ll always be MY baby.”

Camilla laughs as if she thinks I might be teasing... READ MORE

Is Breastfeeding Creepy?

How Sterile Sex Leads to Sterile Bottles

No woman should miss reading Genevieve Kineke’s most recent column at Catholic Exchange: Racks and Ruin

In it, Kineke examines an anti-breastfeeding article by Kathryn Blundell, editor of an Australian parenting magazine. In the article, Blundell explains her aversion to breastfeeding, even calling it “creepy.”

And when you have that attitude (and I admit I made no attempt to change it), seeing your... READ MORE

New Batch of Babies

I feel like a grandmother

A new batch of “babies” arrived yesterday and I couldn’t be prouder.

Years ago, when we decided to get a flock of hens, I wondered if I was in love with the idea of chickens, but would be disappointed with the birds themselves.

But no. I really do love chickens.

Big fat hens are hilariously cute. Rowdy roosters are pretty to look at and predictably noisy (and dumb—Really, Rex? 3:00 am is time to start... READ MORE

I Can Do It Myself!

A hair-cutting triumph

Both my kids have gotten their first-ever haircuts in the past month. And I did them!

Blaise is sixteen months and his hair had never been trimmed. I was loath to take that step, since it seemed to symbolize the end of his babyhood. But he was starting to get a mullet. The hair growing off the back of his head was looking ridiculous.

I asked my stylist and she said that there was no point in bringing... READ MORE
