Book Worm

the good, bad and ugly

I am currently in book number four of a charmingly wonderful series of books (hint: I am in love with a dog named Barnabas).

It has been so fun to start reading this series now because each time I finish a book there is another one just waiting for me at the library. Already written, no waiting list, sitting there on the shelf in the hopes of my visit.

Today I spent hours reading, and it was wonderful.... READ MORE

Why So Serious?

on humility and humor
http://imprinttrainingcenter.blogspot.com

I thought of Lisa’s post about cyber-nastiness this morning while reading A Right to Be Merry,a memoir of life in a Poor Clare cloister.

I’ve long loved Chesterton’s remark that angels can fly because they take themselves so lightly—and I suspect that the nastiness in comment boxes—and on the floor of the House, too—could be improved if we took ourselves less seriously.

The loss of faith has drained... READ MORE

Every Mom Works

I was intrigued by the variety of comments from at-home moms and all manner of working moms Daria Sockey received on her feature article about choosing to stay home. I thought it might be a good idea for this week’s poll to ask Faith & Family readers about their working status. Care to take part? Just scroll down in the right sidebar and share your response. Thanks!

Pace Yourself

taking care of you

How are you feeling? Are you holding up okay?

Around here I’m already feeling a bit of frenzy, and I know I’m not alone. That has been the theme of conversations I’ve had all week. So much to do, so little time!

How can we keep a sense of peace even in the midst of the flurry of activity? What works for you?

These days, I have been so grateful for the built-in stops of feeding Isabel. It’s nice to... READ MORE

Giving Too Much?

Finding the balance in generosity

The responses to my “Helping Hands” post from Monday made me realize: wow, I was taking a simplistic view of this one!

This is one of the reasons I love writing here at Faith & Family, because our lovely readers so often introduce me to new points of view. When I write about a topic, I try to consider as many angles as possible, but I miss so many. When I wrote about stepping out of my comfort zone... READ MORE

Should I Be a 'Working Mom'?

Ask a Priest vol. 13

Q: I am an at-home mom of 4 young children (none of them in school yet) and it’s terrible to admit, but I can’t help but feel sometimes that God means for me to do “more than this.”

I am an attorney and practiced successfully for several years before getting married and becoming a mom. My kids mean the world to me, but isn’t it possible that God doesn’t mean for me to be staying home with them like... READ MORE

Putting Them First

Finding a good kind of unbalance

Sometimes I just have to trust that God knows better than I do.

After I posted yesterday about what a busy and fun week we have going on, I was awakened at 3am today by a little guy whose body felt suspiciously warm to me. I didn’t bother to take his temperature in the dark, but in the morning it was registering 103°. Not freakishly high, but enough to scare me, especially since Camilla very rarely... READ MORE

Balancing Act

What does it look like for you?

This week, we’ve got something going on every day: three playdates, Camilla’s Atrium catechism class, and the ballet-class/playgroup that meets in our living room.

I know that by Friday my laundry pile will have grown to an enormous size, but in the meantime we are having a very fun week. I’m energized and happy and the days are passing quickly. During weeks when we’re cooped up in the house with... READ MORE

Christmas Crunch

This week's Casual Fridays looks at the busy pre-Christmas work crunch

This year, Christmas falls on a Friday, meaning that for many working moms, next week is the last full week of work of 2009.  I’m noticing with my own personal workflow that things seem to be at an almost frenetic pace, as people take advantage of the lingering working days of December to make a dent in the work that needs to be done.  Productivity will likely drop off dramatically the week of Christmas,... She Quit Her Job to Get a Life

Nobody can really 'have it all'
Gaby Hinsliff with Freddie

In a thought-provoking article, Gaby Hinsliff, former political editor of the Observer in the UK, recently admitted something astonishing:

The successful career woman and mother of one small son only appeared to have it all, she explained. Her life was out of balance. And she planned to fix it the only way she knew how—by quitting her job to stay home with her son.

In the sleepless blur of the last... READ MORE
