Christmas Crunch

This week's Casual Fridays looks at the busy pre-Christmas work crunch

This year, Christmas falls on a Friday, meaning that for many working moms, next week is the last full week of work of 2009.  I’m noticing with my own personal workflow that things seem to be at an almost frenetic pace, as people take advantage of the lingering working days of December to make a dent in the work that needs to be done.  Productivity will likely drop off dramatically the week of Christmas,... She Quit Her Job to Get a Life

Nobody can really 'have it all'
Gaby Hinsliff with Freddie

In a thought-provoking article, Gaby Hinsliff, former political editor of the Observer in the UK, recently admitted something astonishing:

The successful career woman and mother of one small son only appeared to have it all, she explained. Her life was out of balance. And she planned to fix it the only way she knew how—by quitting her job to stay home with her son.

In the sleepless blur of the last... READ MORE

3 Things I Hate About Diets

Can't we do a better job of taking care of our bodies and souls?

A beautiful, healthy woman I love and admire once shocked me when she announced her frustration with her inability to lose the last bit of weight from a recent diet regimen.

“I’ll feel better when I get rid of this last 3 pounds,” she told me.

3 pounds??

I think I gain that much just thinking about the ice cream in my freezer. And then I lose it again with one lap around the vestibule of the church... READ MORE

Balancing Resources

Money is not the only one that counts

Our discussion on my frugality post from last week has me thinking about resources.

It’s easy to talk about money because it’s concrete, but there are other resources that are just as important for completing the tasks of our daily lives, like time and energy.

Psalm 127 says,

In vain is your earlier rising, your going later to rest, you who toil for the bread you eat, when he pours gifts on his beloved... READ MORE

Work and Play

Good moms play Candy Land. Or do they?

I spent about 20 minutes yesterday morning playing Scrabble Junior.

It felt like 90.

“It’s your turn, Gabby,” I found myself saying over and over again, hoping my abruptness did not betray my feelings of frustration. And mind-numbing boredom.

“Look for a place to put your D,” I told her. “How about over here?” My finger tapped the board impatiently.

No go. Gabby is a smart girl. She will not be told... READ MORE

The Grocery Store Can Be Fun

or How My Men Like to Shop

When my four oldest boys were little, we ate our way through the grocery store. Not necessarily the entire store, but usually from the half-way point on.

In those days, an outing to the grocery store was an all-day affair. The boys and I would usually arrive in the late morning, eat a light lunch in the dining area and then hit the aisles. We would wind our way up and down, row after row, the boys... READ MORE

Love and Marriage

What three things would you tell someone who is about to get married?

This is the first in a series of upcoming posts. In the coming days, each of our bloggers will be posting some thoughts on marriage and we hope that you will join the conversation.

Our assignment? What three things would you tell someone who is about to get married?

Here are mine:

1. The thing that drives you crazy is also the thing you love.

When you find yourself clashing with some part of your... READ MORE

Lazy Days

Having to move slow is often hardest on the mom

This morning I stopped by the home of a friend who had a baby a few weeks ago. Not surprising, my friend was nursing her baby and as she is a pro, she walked out to greet me with the baby easily attached.

I asked how things were going and she said things were going just fine but that she felt for her kids. This summer, she noted, is not quite the same as last.

I could totally feel her pain. Last... READ MORE

Falling out of Balance

Kristen’s volunteer efforts were admirable — but at a cost

Kristen and Matt had five kids at home when Matt was laid off from his medical technology job in New Mexico. Life had been chaotic and stressful over the years, but now it was worse.

Just to keep bread and milk on the table, Matt quickly went to work for two guys with a pickup who had a makeshift landscaping company.

While Matt mowed lawns and shoveled dirt, Kristen made phone calls trying to find... READ MORE

From Fat to Fit

How One Mom Lost 80 Pounds ... and Found Joy in Living

My last two babies were born 16 months apart.

Losing weight was hard — too hard, I reasoned — and besides, I was busy raising my children.

My husband had pledged to marry me for better or for worse, and so he’d have to be happy with me the way I was. We weren’t going to get divorced, so I could relax and not worry so much about my looks. Not to mention, there was no way in the world that I would... READ MORE
