Holy Week Traditions

Please share yours!

I don’t have a great attention span, and it’s a struggle for me to stay focused during the long haul of Lent. So I love Holy Week, because it gives me a chance to make that last push before we celebrate the Resurrection really count.

For a while I’ve had a tradition to make an extra sacrifice during the week leading up to the Triduum.

One crazy Holy Week during my college years I gave up eating everything... READ MORE

"We Shall Be Like Him"

Hope from the Scriptures

This was the New Testament reading from Evening Prayer last night:

See what love the Father has bestowed on us in letting us be called children of God!
Yet that is what we are.
The reason the world does not recognize us is that it never recognized the Son.
Dearly beloved,
we are God’s children now;
what we shall later be has not yet come to light.
We know that when it comes to light
we shall be like... READ MORE

'Shake Off the Dust'

from today's Gospel

And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to hear you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them.” So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.
—Mark 6:11-13

Jesus, wherever we go, help us to bring others closer to You.

Even the Wind and the Sea Obey Him

from today's Gospel
Rembrandt "Jesus Calms the Storm"

But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care if we perish?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you no faith?” And they were filled with awe, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”
—Mark 4:38-41

Be with us in the storm and strengthen our weak faith, Lord.

No Laughing Matter

Are jokes at Mass appropriate?

Yesterday in my travels through the Catholic news headlines, I spotted one that caught my attention:  “No jokes at Mass: Aussie bishop”.  The article went on to quote Sydney Auxiliary Bishop Julian Porteous in his conversation with the Sydney Morning Herald.

“A religious ceremony, for Catholics a Mass, is a sacred event, and therefore the whole context of celebration should be one that engenders respect,... READ MORE

A Viable VBS Option

Vacation Bible School that's Catholic, flexible, and free!

The good folks at Holy Heroes have done it again.

The same people who offer Advent and Lenten aids that Catholic families can use at home have announced a new program, Summer Faith Adventure, for Summer 2009:

“Choose your week to receive 5 daily emails full of short videos, activities, prayers, songs, all-new coloring pages, quizzes, and puzzles, everything you need to have a summer camp in your own home or backyard.”

This is a great option for a Catholic VBS program, one that you can keep simple or add to as you see fit. If you have signed up for other Holy Heroes programs in the past, you will need to update your profile to receive the summer program during the week of your choice. If you haven’t participated in the past, simply provide your email address and choose the week that works best for you. Here’s the link to sign up.

Summer Faith Adventure is a free way to give your kids faith formation and inspiration during the summer months ... what could be more awesome than that?

Behold Paschal Playdoh Productions!

Commenting on the latest Lego Gospel, reader Patricia mentioned her kids do something similar in Play-Doh.

“Paschal Playdoh Productions,” she said.

“Show us,” I asked, and she graciously agreed.

The following shots come from the incredibly creative hands of Abraham & Abigail (with occasional help from Silas).

You’ll have to take my word for it how delightful their live action play doh gospel videos... READ MORE
