Oh How We Complain

Lenten Reflection

Wednesday, March 28

But with their patience worn out by the journey,
the people complained against God and Moses,
“Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in this desert,
where there is no food or water?
We are disgusted with this wretched food!”

What is the context for today’s Old Testament reading? The people have been rescued from Egypt by the miraculous Ten Plagues, the last of which was... READ MORE

Blessing of a Child in the Womb

A wonderful new blessing!

This morning, on my Facebook feed a wonderful image caught my eye—an ultrasound scan, shared by friends announcing that they had learned the gender of their soon to be born son. With great joy, they shared his name. This will enable me to add him—by name—to my prayer list, months before he arrives on the scene. Naming him, seeing his photo, and knowing his parents’ great joy helps me to celebrate... READ MORE

Gifts from God

Lenten Reflection

Wednesday, March 21

But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me;
my Lord has forgotten me.”
Can a mother forget her infant,
be without tenderness for the child of her womb?
Even should she forget,
I will never forget you.

What is your image of your heavenly Father? An old man with a long white beard and flowing robes? What is his temperament? A type of kindly grandfather or perhaps a stern schoolteacher... READ MORE

If God is For Us

Lenten Reflection

Sunday, March 4

If God is for us, who can be against us?

I think of that line whenever I think of being a kid, being that boy saying to another boy, “well you know what? MY DAD CAN BEAT UP YOUR DAD!” How funny would it be if dads actually fought over their sons’ playground honor in grade school? (This definitely sounds like something I could pitch in a reality series.) When I see that line in scripture,... READ MORE

Count Your Christmas Blessings

Says you: share the best part of Christmas for you

Unless you’re one of those stalwarts who can keep celebrating right through Candlemas on February 2, our Christmas celebration closes with Epiphany (yesterday) and today’s transferred feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

Each feast celebrates public manifestations of Christ: news of his coming reaching beyond Israel to the gentiles, and the beginning of his public ministry.

I thought it might be nice... READ MORE

Celebrate Family

Eat Together!

September 26th has been declared by President Obama as a day for our nation to reflect “...on the blessings of family and participating in family activities that strengthen relationships between children and parents”.

The fine folks at E-mealz are celebrating all week and as part of their Proud to be a Family campaign, they’re offering free recipes and fun activities and lots of linky round-ups.

For... READ MORE

Two for One

challenges/blessings

I like to nap with a baby. I lie on my side, snuggle the baby on my arm, and wake up well rested hours later.

Twins complicate this.

Last week my big kids were at my parents’ house, and I was determined to nap with the twins. But the couple times I tried it, I ended up on my back in the bed with a baby on each arm, afraid to move either of them but unable to sleep well myself.

The situation felt... READ MORE

Father Knows Best

When God hands us unexpected blessings

Over at Sipping Lemonade, Lauren has a beautiful reflection on the birth of her daughter six months ago.

Baby Kate, to the surprise of her parents, was born with Down Syndrome. The news came as a shock, which quickly turned to humble gratitude.

[It’s been] six and a half months since we finally decided on her name in the delivery room – a decision that seemed so hard to make (almost providentially)... READ MORE

Birthday Blessings

When moms get older...

As Danielle mentioned earlier in the month, a bevy of us here on the blog have celebrated June birthdays. Mine occurred yesterday, and as the “old lady” of the Faith & Family crew I’m proud to announce that I am now the big 4-8.

Forty-eight, wow—that is super old! The amazing thing is that when I woke up yesterday morning, rather than lamenting my elderly state, I was able to really happily embrace... READ MORE

Babies Crazy May

The wildest blessed month of my life

When I woke this morning and realized it is June, I breathed a sigh of relief.

On May 1st, I got up and said to my husband, “This will probably be the month we have the babies!” I had no idea what a crazy month it would be.

The wild ride began on May 2nd, when I was 33 weeks exactly, with a visit to labor & delivery triage that gave us our first indication the twins might be coming sooner rather than... READ MORE
