To Save A Thousand Souls

another book giveaway

A few years ago, our parish was graced with one of the most dynamic priests I had ever met. Fr. Brett had such a contagious love for Jesus that just being around him made me want to be holy, to do better, to be better.

Fr. Brett didn’t stay long at our parish—he was soon offered a position at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary to help with priestly formation. While I was sad to see him go, I couldn’t think... READ MORE

New Arrival

a labor of love

I was quite excited when the FedEx man stopped by my house today—to drop off a copy of my book!

The book officially comes out April 1, so I had been wondering how soon I would get an advance copy. When I saw the truck slowing down I wondered if this was the moment and it was a little surreal to discover it was.

It’s been a very fun afternoon flipping through the book (I got just the one copy) and watching loved ones do the same. My husband is currently in our room reading, and I think the highlight was hearing my nine-year-old tell me he just *had* to bring this to school tomorrow. A very exciting time indeed.

Don't Give Up Chocolate for Lent

Grow closer to Christ Instead

A few months ago, I was honored to be asked to review a copy of Consoling the Heart of Jesus: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat by Br. Michael Gaitley, MIC.

I get a lot of books in the mail, and many of them are spiritual ones. But in many years not one of them has spoken to my heart the way that this book has.

Brother Michael has a rare gift for speaking to simple souls and encouraging them to draw closer... READ MORE

Birthday Baking is the Best

Happy Birthday #10 Sweet Juliette!

Hard to believe that ten years ago today, I spent the morning doing my very best not to curse at a well-intentioned nurse who continually offered me a “birthing ball.”

No thank you, Ma’am ... No, really, I don’t want it ... Please, no ... NO BALL! GO AWAY!  NO BALL!

It got pretty ugly.

But birthing ball or no birthing ball, the end result of that labor of love was well worth every bit it cost me.... READ MORE

Life!

what an adventure

Tonight, my six-year-old was sitting on his baby brother’s red trike. He was looking down, focused on the book he was reading aloud to me as I worked on a project in the dining room.

As my boy read, he slowly, slowly pedaled forward, unaware that he had progressed all the way from the middle of the kitchen to the side of the dining room table.

“Look out, look out!” I cried. But it was too late.

My son looked up from his book to discover he was now in the dining room and that he had pedaled the trike right into the mess I was cleaning up—which was, I’m sad to report, a big pile of his older brother’s puke.

He burst into tears, my boy, but not because I had startled him or because his shoes were now covered with sick. He was sad because he had gotten the wheels of Baby Henry’s little trike covered with that nastiness.

The moment was sweet and disgusting all at the same time.

Good Book

An interesting read

Boys Adrift, by Leonard Sax is a look at the growing trend of poor motivation and lowered ambition in boys and young men today. The author discusses a variety of studies that look at performance in school, contrasts between boys and girls, and changes in the educational system over the years.

If you haven’t heard of this book and you have boys in your life, it’s worth picking up. I’m just a few chapters... READ MORE
