Bye Bye Borders

Sad to see a bookstore closing

Amidst today’s happy news in Philadelphia comes a story that made me sad - Borders will be closing their remaining 399 stores across the country.

As a reader, and even more so as a writer, this news saddens me. There is simply nothing like walking into a giant bookstore and spending an hour or two browsing. I have so many wonderful memories with our boys in our local Borders—story hours, running... READ MORE

This week on the Faith & Family Live Cast (click here to listen or click on the player above), Lynn, Hallie and I take a break from the summer heat to enjoy a fun conversation about staying “motivated” during the summer, when all we really feel like doing is sipping a cool drink and taking a nap! Are you feeling lazy and lax this summer? How do you motivate yourself to stay on top of teaching kids,... READ MORE

Book Worm

the good, bad and ugly

I am currently in book number four of a charmingly wonderful series of books (hint: I am in love with a dog named Barnabas).

It has been so fun to start reading this series now because each time I finish a book there is another one just waiting for me at the library. Already written, no waiting list, sitting there on the shelf in the hopes of my visit.

Today I spent hours reading, and it was wonderful.... READ MORE

Modern Reading

dragging my heels

I am not one of the millions of people who uses an e-book reader, but the more I hear about them the more intrigued I become.

If you’re thinking, um, e-book vs. regular book is sooo two years ago, I’ll admit I am slow-moving when it comes to technology. I know all kinds of people started using these gadgets a few years ago, I just have not felt compelled to give one a try.

Lately, however, it seems... READ MORE

Blueberry Time

my favorite

We are back from a blueberry picking excursion and I am in heaven.

On my countertops sit gallon buckets filled to the brim with Nature’s Perfect Food—rich in vitamins, fiber and antioxidents.

Our outing reminded me of one of our favorite books, Blueberries for Sal. I think I’ll go read that to my crew right now.

In the meantime, if you have any favorite blueberry recipes, please do share! While we eat the bulk of our berries raw, I’ve got a lot of cooking (and eating) to do.

Did You Know You Could Do This With a Kindle?

This is my recent anniversary present — an Amazon Kindle.

Three months ago, I never would have dreamed of wanting such a thing, belonging, as I do, to that group of people (generally over age 45, although there are younger exceptions), who disdainfully sniff at the idea of ebooks.

“Who wants to spend any more hours staring at a screen than I have to?” we say.

“I like holding my book in my hand while... READ MORE

Prayer in the Digital Age

A "must read" for today's wired Catholic!

Later in the week, I’ll be excited to share with you the continuing adventures I’ve been enjoying for the past few days. But today, I want to interrupt my travelogue to tell you about an interview I’m sharing this week with my good friend and Danielle’s (and my) radio producer extraordinaire, Matt Swaim. Matt is the author of the brand new book Prayer in the Digital Age.

I’ve known Matt for a few... READ MORE

When Spirits Attack

a beginner's guide to discernment of spirits

Jennifer Fulwiler penned an important post on spiritual attack earlier this week.

A famous revert to the faith—who then reverted right back out—is what prompts her thinking.

I remember reading some years ago that something like 50% of the people who come into the Church at Easter fall away again within a year.

I don’t think that’s all a matter of poor catechesis.

I think Jen is right: we need to... READ MORE

Light Reading

what do you recommend?
Reading Woman, Ivan Kramskoy, photo by paukrus

In my weekend post, Emily asks:

“Do you have any suggestions for fun fiction paperbacks?  I need a fun, brainless read in my life.  My sister gave me some chick lit books by Emily Griffin but books like that that really tout materialism and sometimes shallow relationships (ntm a lot of sex).  It doesn’t need to be Christian but is there any fun fiction for women that’s not going to act on my soul in a negative way?”

Good question. I was going to recommend the Patrick O’Brien Aubrey/Maturin series, but then she stumped me with the “for women.”

Andrea suggested the #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series.

Can you help Emily find a light, relaxing—but not utterly pointless—read?
