Following up on Arwen’s post yesterday about books being “old friends”, I wanted to introduce you to a “new friend” - the latest book by Catholic speaker and internationally syndicated radio host Teresa Tomeo. Newsflash! My Surprising Journey from Secular Anchor to Media Evangelist is Teresa Tomeo’s first person account of the events in her life that have brought her to her current role as a woman... Re-reading is Great

I have been visiting old friends this past week, and enjoying it immensely. More specifically, I am re-reading L.M. Montgomery’s Anne books. Nearly everyone has heard of Anne of Green Gables but I love not just the first book but the whole series, and have read all of the books more times than I can count.
I know there are people who don’t re-read books. I had a friend in college who thought me... READ MORE
Guilt Be Gone

When my oldest child was a toddler, we read stacks and stacks of story books every night. She had her favorites memorized and we would spend hours each evening enjoying them together, over and over again.
These days, I sometimes look at my younger kids and feel a pang of guilt. When did we last spend hours and hours snuggled together on the couch reading and re-reading favorite classic stories before... READ MORE

This morning, I received an email from a wonderful woman who is seeking to help a special girl in her life. The young girl in question is a recent First Communicant who is experiencing some spiritual difficulty. Along with advising her to seek counseling from both her pastor and her pediatrician, I would like to recommend some age appropriate books for this little girl. So I am turning to you -... READ MORE
Brain Food

We’ve had more than our fair share of rain here in New Hampshire over the past several days. We Beans have been more fortunate than some, though. Yesterday’s wild storms and floods left many people with damaged homes and personal injuries. We’ve only gotten a thorough soaking.
With weather keeping us all indoors, though, our boys have been going a little stir crazy. A trip to the library where we... READ MORE
Pages Ahead

When I was a kid we didn’t have a television, and my five younger siblings and I loved to read. Our favorite night of the month was Library Night, when our parents would take us to the library and we’d check out a big pile of books. We thought it was cruel of them to limit us to eight books each, but 6x8=48, which is a lot, so I guess they were justified. Anyway, we were voracious readers.

Redeemed

I just finished reading Redeemed: A Spiritual Misfit Stumbles Toward God, Marginal Sanity, and the Peace That Passes All Understanding by Heather King.
Before I read it, what intrigued me most about this book which chronicles one woman’s struggles with addiction and her spiritual journey toward Catholicism was that it came highly recommended to me ... by a non-Catholic.
But now that I’ve read the... READ MORE
About Bullies

Today I’d like to introduce what I hope will be a regular feature. I’ll toss out what I hope is a provocative topic, you weigh in, and we all benefit from the variety of perspectives and experience. Here goes….
When I was a girl, Mom made a point of telling us if we ever saw a child being made fun of, she hoped her children not only wouldn’t participate, but would rise to that child’s defense.
“Sit... READ MORE

My children and I devour picture books. On rare occasions, we find a book that magically transports us into another world. Its breathtaking illustrations and captivating story steal our hearts and minds. Hana in the Time of the Tulips is one such book.
Although it is a story about a young girl growing up in the Netherlands long ago, it is a book that transcends time, as well as the borders of any... READ MORE
