My Latest Appliance Crush
Posted by Danielle Bean in Food on Friday, June 10, 2011
My parents bought me this pretty little thing for my birthday this year.
I am thrilled! And excited! And confirmed in my theory that true happiness comes in the form of kitchen appliances.
Just kidding.
Sort of.
Well, I am happy, and it has a little bit to do with the sweet machine kneading a 2-pound loaf of country white on my counter top right now.
I have been enthusiastically checking out the tips... READ MORE
Incredible, Edible St. Nick

We did it! We baked him!
And all were pleased. Everyone, that is, but one 5-year-old who was pretty put-out to discover that the jolly old saint’s mustache was eaten by an older sibling while he was busy upstairs with Playmobil.
But on the whole, a success. Hope your feast day is happy too!
Warm Up With Pumpkin Soup
Posted by Danielle Bean in Food on Tuesday, October 19, 2010
Over the weekend, I was inspired by the simple recipe for Pumpkin Soup Kristen Laurence shared.
My one word review? Yum. It was perfect with grilled cheese sandwiches and it tastes exactly like a fall soup should. I am patting myself on the back for having discovered such a delicious way to get some calcium, vitamin A, and beta carotene into my kids.
I am a big fan of pumpkin flavors in the fall,... READ MORE
Back to School Breakfasts

It’s that time of year—a time for breaking into new routines and getting a move on in the morning.
For me, when it comes to back-to-school breakfasts, the key is finding something ...
1. my kids will actually eat.
2. quick.
3. painless to prepare.
4. nutritious enough to quiet my inner mother-guilt.
Here are some recipes I have been researching lately that I think fit the bill:
Cornbread (even kids... READ MORE
A Friend to Salad

In summer, we love dinner salads.
We start with lettuce, and add a protein. Chicken or crumbled bacon with chopped boiled eggs are our favorites. Then we toss in whatever vegetables, fruits, or nuts we’re in the mood for, and voila! A cool dinner that’s perfect for hot weather.
I know there are many men who would not consider a salad to be sufficient for dinner. I’m lucky to have a husband who will... READ MORE
Conventional Oven

Today, I took advantage of the chilly, rainy weather and spent the afternoon baking. I made several loaves of pumpkin bread and a batch of chocolate chip cookies.
For both of these items I have a recipe I normally use, and today for some strange reason I tried new recipes for both. Boy was that a mistake!
The cookies weren’t too bad. I used the recipe off the bag of my Ghiradelli chips, different... READ MORE
How to Cheat at Baking

“You made bread?” my 13-year-old son said to me yesterday afternoon as I pulled two loaves of freshly baked batter bread from the oven. “Awesome!”
His enthusiasm was enough to convince me I should bake bread more often.
Years ago, I used to make homemade bread several times a week. These days, though, I store my yeast in the freezer and months go by without it seeing a single use. Life just got a... READ MORE
Lenten Bread

A couple of years ago, my older kids got the idea that they would like to do a “bread and water” fast on Ash Wednesday.
I surely didn’t want to be an obstacle on their path to what are obviously great heights of holiness, but I did want to be sure they were still getting necessary nutrition, even on a fasting day. So that year, I baked up a couple loaves of whole wheat bread, and a tradition was born.... READ MORE
Bread of Life

Here’s an interesting article about a family-run business in Rhode Island that makes and sells communion wafers.
Says Andy Cavanagh, General Manager of Cavanagh Company: “The best thing we can do is make sure the bread is perfect in every way possible.”
Self-buttering Bread

It’s gotten cold here in Washington, DC.
As we live in a drafty Victorian built shortly after the Civil War, cold weather means my daughter and I retreat to the kitchen many Sunday afternoons to get a leg up on the week’s cooking and baking—and be able to feel our feet and hands.
Yesterday one of our projects was brioche—those feathery-light little loaves that are traditionally served with a top-knot... READ MORE
