Race for the Cure Drops Planned Parenthood—Updated

Note: see bottom of this post for an update

The Susan G. Komen foundation is cutting ties with Planned Parenthood—at least for now.

The severance has not been announced publicly, and officially at least is not a repudiation of Planned Parenthood.

Komen spokeswoman Leslie Aun said the cutoff results from the charity’s newly adopted criteria barring grants to organizations that are under investigation... READ MORE

Taking Back Pink

...and have you had your annual mammogram?

My Halloween “treat” to myself this year was a trip to my local women’s imaging center for my annual mammogram. I managed to fit it into the month of October, but just barely, and am happy to report that I received a clean bill of health. I don’t know if having had so many treatments and mammos over the past years has dulled my senses, but it even seemed less uncomfortable than past screenings.

But... READ MORE

A Timely Reminder

Have you had your annual mammogram?

When I checked my calendar for tomorrow, I saw it there in big bold letters: Mammogram.  Surprisingly, the appointment I normally dread for weeks kind of snuck up on me this time around.  It’s become a bit of a routine - since my treatment for non-invasive breast cancer almost two years ago, I get checked out on a fairly regular basis.  It’s never fun, but these days it does bring me a peace of mind... Happy Dance

A hospital put this video together for breast cancer awareness. In all honesty, I’m not sure I’m more aware, but I’m definitely more cheerful.

The Finish Line

Thank you for your prayers!

Since you have all been so wonderful about sharing my recent medical journey with me, I wanted to share with you the good news that yesterday I completed my radiation therapy treatments!

For the past seven weeks, five days a week, I have been making visits to our local Cancer Center.  Every morning, I tried my best to enter the building with a cheerful smile on my face and a good attitude.  Some days,... READ MORE

The Halfway Mark

I'm celebrating being halfway done with treatments!

Midway through yesterday morning’s radiation treatment, when the machine was about halfway through the daily path is makes around my body, I closed my eyes and said a silent prayer of thanksgiving.

At that moment of my 16.5th treatment, I was officially halfway done with this phase of my little battle with breast cancer.

The moment wasn’t lost on me - it’s been a long three and half weeks.  More so... READ MORE

Running on Empty

Fatigue begins to set in - emotionally and physically

Despite my determined attitude, the realities of having been diagnosed with and being treated for breast cancer have begun to sunk in a bit this week.

First off, let me reiterate that blessedly my battle is relatively simple since mine was caught so early through a mammogram - I had surgery and am now going through 7 weeks of daily radiation, but no chemo, so I’m one of the lucky ones!  I’m in good... READ MORE

Random Radiation Musings

Day 1 of 33 - have you scheduled your annual mammogram yet?!

Hi everyone!  I thought I would document my first day of radiation treatments here for memory’s sake, since I hope this will all be over and forgotten very soon!  First off, for those of you who missed the reason for the radiation treatments, you can read this blog post about my recent diagnosis with DCIS, a common and treatable form of breast cancer.

Second, thanks to each and every one of you who... READ MORE

A Medical Update

Thanks for your recent prayers!

Hi friends and family!  Since I’ve been very open with you over the past few weeks in sharing about my little medical situation and last week’s surgery, I wanted to give you an update on my post surgery appointment yesterday and subsequent diagnosis.

During last week’s surgery, additional tissue was excised and sent to pathology for analysis.  After several long days of waiting, we learned yesterday... READ MORE
