Bereavement Travel
Posted by Lisa Hendey in Just me on Tuesday, March 22, 2011
This morning, I’m sitting in the airport waiting to fly to Fort Wayne, Indiana for the funeral of my paternal grandfather. Although travel seems to be a big part of my life these days, this trip was unexpected and very sudden - I hope to tell you more later in the week about my Grandpa, the father of seven, and an amazing man.
But today, I want to tell you a few things I’ve learned yesterday about... READ MORE
A-ha!

Sometimes you just need to re-invent the wheel.
I’ve had two of those lightbulb moments recently, beautiful split-seconds when I’ve realized that we’ve been going at a particular household task from the wrong angle and then figuring out—voila!—what we can do to help.
The answer often tends to be quite simple, and why didn’t I think of this earlier? But I didn’t think of it earlier, I thought of it... READ MORE
Irrational

We can drink some milk around here. For the longest time, I thought that was a good thing.
Then last week, the boys managed to gulp their way through an entire week’s supply of milk in four days. There was no “pushing through,” no chance of somehow making it without milk until my next trip to the grocers. This was undeniably, indisputably, absolutely hoggish. This was par for the course, and then... READ MORE
Buying Water
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Homemaking on Wednesday, June 02, 2010
I’m loving reading everyone’s responses to Rachel’s post about grocery shopping. There’s so much variety. Fun!
My own response is that I know it’s time for a grocery store trip when we’re running low on juice, milk, or water. But as I wrote that I realized it might seem weird. How can you run low on water, especially when you live in the Great Lakes State?
Here’s how: we buy water.
It is neither frugal... READ MORE
Beauty on Budget

One of my most cherished memories from my adolescence is the seasonal trip to the Clinique counter that my mother and I would make together.
I don’t remember why Clinique became our cosmetic company of choice, though I continue to be happy with their products to this day. I imagine my Mom had identified it as her favorite at some point and so naturally I adopted it as my own, as well.
My mother always... READ MORE
Enjoying Innovation
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Homemaking on Tuesday, February 09, 2010
I made rice crispy treats and minty brownies for the Super Bowl on Sunday, and in the process I got to use one of my favorite kitchen innovations: nonstick aluminum foil.
Are you familiar with this stuff? I grabbed it off the shelf at the grocery store once on a whim, and as soon as I tried it, I was hooked. At the time I was making my family’s favorite lemon bars often, and the filling had an awful... READ MORE
What Do You Eat in a Week?

When last weekend’s Homemaking Coffee Talk turned to the subject of grocery budgets, I was very interested to see the variety of responses. It’s amazing how much food habits and what is considered “normal” can vary from family to family and from region to region.
That variety also happens to be the subject of Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, a photo book by author-journalist Peter Menzel.
Menzel... READ MORE
Pizza for a Crowd
Posted by Arwen Mosher in Food on Tuesday, May 05, 2009
Pizza is popular, but it can be expensive, so I like to make it at home.
Sometimes I get fancy with a super-hot oven and a stone and gourmet toppings, but mostly I like to go the easy route.
My go-to pizza recipe is made in a baking sheet, and serves a [small] crowd - I made it last evening and five hungry adults and two children had plenty to eat, with two pieces left over.
The ratio of dough to... READ MORE
Battle Over Contraceptive Funding
Posted by Rebecca Teti in News on Tuesday, January 27, 2009
The new budget may not include funding for contraceptives after all.
Perhaps you’ve seen by now the rather incredible comments Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made during a Sunday morning interview.
The logic of what she says—providing contraception to the poor will reduce costs to state governments—is chilling, as numerous Catholic and pro-life websites have pointed out. It reflects an attitude... READ MORE
